Alternatives to Bestine For Shapeways Models

Apparently Bestine is either not allowed in California anymore or it is in VERY limited supply. I've tried Hobby Lobby, drafting supply, and art supply stores and they don't have it and either can't or are unwilling to try and order it. I've heard mixed results with Goo Gone removing the wax from Shapeways models. What else may work or does Goo Gone work good enough. Thanks for the input...

Order Bestine online via Amazon.  They have the best pricing anyway, outside of Walmart.

I use 91% alcohol works just fine for me.

Where in CA are you?  I recently bought mine at Riley Street art supply in San Rafael. You should be able to find it at good art supply stores. I would also try Blick or Flax if you have one near you.

I once tried using 91% alcohol to strip the paint off a FUD model. The results were sub-optimal -



I couldn't even begin to explain why that would happen  :?

In the UK we use Goo Gone as we also can't get Bestine.

Thanks for the replies. It seems that we do have a Blick in town but it's called something else (Uhtrecht Art Supplies). I'll go by there today and see if they have it. Otherwise, Amazon here I come.

And if all else fails, there's always Ram Piss...

Bestine is n- heptane, an aliphatic hydrocarbon.    Naphtha from the hardware store is a mix of aliphatic hydrocarbons, but the heavier ones present will be slower to evaporate than heptane.  Coleman fuel is a similar mixture.

However, Primus Powerfuel for camping stoves is allegedly straight n-heptane.

So...do all Shapeways products have this stuff on them that has to be removed? I have a couple things (truck tractor and trailer) that seem like they're pretty clean and ready for paint.

I've never had a totally "clean" Shapeways model but I never used Bestine to clean them.. I just washed with warm water and detergent and a stiff bristle artists brush to get some of the gunk out of recesses.  I painted with acrylics only.  Never had an issue.   ymmv.
