My H30's landed yesterday. I didn't really have a plan for them when I ordered them, but now I'm thinking sand service for the Altoona and River City engine shops.

However, now I need to know what to do with it.  What would have been shipped in a small covered hopper to a farming and/or mining town in central Montana in 1974?  Especially what would be valuable enough to ship from the Northeast?  Cement comes from local plants, and the H30 is too small for grain shipments.

Tough call.  The H30 class carried cement primarily, AFAIK.

Generally, H30s were returned to PRR when empty though.  So it's not as if the cars were nomadic, moving from industry to industry to industry across the country.

Sink-float media for coal cleaning (pulling magnetics out of it) that would come from ground magnetite ore.

Blazeman:  That sounds like a good idea, as my mining area produces a lot of coal.  Thank you! 

Bryan:  That's what I kinda figured.  Most of the small covered hoppers I know of carried mostly cement, and no one in their right mind would haul cement 2000 miles when it's made less than a hundred miles away.  There were at least two big cement plants in the Three Forks, MT area, which is also on the BN, so a natural source for my industries.
