The long awaited GM&O GP30

Well Atlas has finally decided to produce one of my favorite locomotives; the GM&O GP30. I think they had 31 on the roster so I knew it was just a matter of time. My only concern for Atlas is the walkway/handrail part. Are they going to be able to make the handrails yellow and the walkway black if they're the same piece of shiny plastic. Hopefully so, or maybe there was a retool(?) If Paul or anyone else in the know wants to chime in, please do. I imagine it will be easier to paint a yellow walkway black, than it will be to paint a black handrail yellow (and have it stay yellow). I'll be buying all 3 numbers regardless. Thanks Atlas

Atlas has done separately colored walkways and handrails on several releases of GP30s now.   Santa Fe comes to mind, I believe CB&Q as well.   If they don't color them correctly it's probably because they didn't get the correct information or made a mistake along the way (and not in order to cut costs, or because they don't care).    These aren't the old days in N scale anymore.

This is a welcome addition.

Many of these GM&O EMD locos had recycled trucks from ALco trade ins (RS-3s I think).

In the old days this was a bit challenging to model.

Here is a custom painted GP35 made by Kato for Atlas.  I shaved the sideframes and added old Japanese Atlas RS3 sideframes.




And since we are on GM&O, here is a crummy I made for the same customer.  A NE style caboose with an international widevision cupola.  Kind of weird, but cool.

I remember reading the article you did about that car. I then made my own variation for the freelance road I was doing at the time.

Atlas needs to redo the GP30, GP35 and GP40 in CB&Q. In fact without getting up and walking to the layout I want to say the GP35's don't even have numbered boards, just jig hated clear boards.

   GM&O got the 1st 80 Alco FA/FB-1s built,they even looked slightly different,
   some As had PA style wire grids added,also had lowered headlite grills,gave
  the A units a Unique look for sure.
   later GM&O bought an order of FB-2s to supplement the FB-1s.
   that's where the GP30 and GP35 Type B trucks came from.
   GM&O RS-1,RS-2,and RS-3s made it to ICG,or at least some of them did.

Of course people should know, these days you can get the Alco trucks with a simple sideframe swap (Atlas parts).

Yes I should have pointed that out.

The new China trucks are interchangeable.
So a GM&O fan would have a much easier time duplicating this GP35 now.

They need to high hood them. That would make Southern, N&W, NS fans happy, and open up some regional schemes that would be cool.

Atlas is a company that has been responsive to suggestions for color tint changes.

Years and years ago, they got chessie orange too red (repeatedly).  After a couple of releases and my private emails suggesting correction, Paul Graf finally emailed me and said- you give us a formula.  We don't seem to be getting it right, so give us a specific suggestion.  And I did.

Whether they ever used my formula or not, I have no idea.  But they finally adjusted the orange (vermillion) to where it looks great.

Concrete specific suggestions are the most appreciated.  They like it when someone says THIS paint is the right color.

Simply saying what they did is wrong is not as helpful.
