I believe it is their own design.

AFAIK, the mechanism is unique to MT FTs - it was manufactured for them in China. It is a typical Chinese N scale loco mechanism design (similar to Kato).
Maybe you are thinking of MT SW1500 - that mechanism is based on Life-Like SW1200.

I'm not sure which manufacturer of decoder you wish to use, but a quick search on Digitrax's website found this for the Micro Trains FT units:
http://www.digitrax.com/products/mobile-decoders/dn163m0/
MBK has five in stock:
http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/Digitrax-DN163M0-N-Plug-N-Play-Decoder-Microtrains-p/dig-dn163m0.htm
You should be able to do a similar search for your favorite brand of decoder.

Thanks Guys.
Appreciate the info.
I didn't know MTL had their own unique mechanism. The Digitrax decoder will work just fine.

Yes, MTL's FT's are thus far their one and only proprietary mechanism design.

Thanks Mark.
I read the review on your very informative site. The information there is most helpful.
Thanks you
