whew, im sure glad you could clear that up for me! I  simply couldn't figure out where to get the right decals at all!

In case you didn't see my reply above,  this has already been gone over  acknowledged my mistake .  I'm just trying to figure out why the last few times I ordered the CORRECT  white UP  steam decals from a  major  vendor I got  the silvers. oh well nothing a little work won't fix when I finally get the right set.  of course that will be done after removal of the feed water heater and tender changes but I'm waiting on an extra shell  before I slice and dice.

and to be fair,  " when interpreting signals"  there is no amber signal. at least not at any signal locations I've every worked on from the Bellingham sub to the beardstown.  you might want to fix that.

Is that metallic aluminum color to us non-UP-experts mortals?

Yep . Thanks to manufactures we see white more often than silver . Also oxidation and dirt disguises the silver to look more dirty white . I have seen a newly delivered big boy with white from the Alco shops and added silver from the UP shops . One was the cab lettering and the other was the tendering lettering , I forget which . Having said that , most of the time it looks white to me , and I have decaled some locos in white , then added weathering which almost makes it impossible to tell if it was white or silver . UP is a paint in the a$$ !

Direct from the UP God .

I  stand corrected.  guess I should just stick to the Santa fe lol.  for some reason white lettering for up  steam had been stuck in my head.  maybe it's the " appearing white" in photos that's been my problem.  guess I'll fix this thing tonight with all of the decals I have!  for some reason I thought I  read that there was some discussion of lettering color for up but I remember now that it was about the early  two tone grey that was thought to be white instead of silver.

If it helps, here is a link to the Microscale set, 60-63. The numbers and main lettering are silver-ish to represent the aluminum paint. They make hay over it being "for black locomotives only", I'm guessing after getting nastygrams from modelers trying to do the Greyhound scheme.

I have a set hiding in the depths of my project boxes. I'd look for it, but all that would happen is the piles on the bench would get shifted around and I'd misplace yet something else started and not done. :|

thanks Mike and Richie!  the bad news is you guys made me cut this thing up a bit to truly back date it with removal of the feed water heater in front of the stack. it's a bit of a fudge but I'm going no smoke lifters,  post oil conversion but without being painted greyhound.  they did exist but there weren't many that made it to oil without  being painted greyhound in the same shopping.  I'm modeling 1947  so it's easily in the time frame as the change to oil was finished in 1946.  maybe Jason and Bob can come in here also as I know three guys will be doing the same thing I'm doing here.
again thanks for grilling me  and forcing me into  this completely lol!
I'll post pictures later this evening.

Sounds like a nice project, Adam. I need to research what 8444's details were ~1970 and what differs from the model. But given everything on my platter at the moment, maybe it's best to wait for Kato to do 8444.

Here's something for you - Microscale's search doesn't work the best, so I spent a few minutes on their site sort of rummaging around. To my surprise, there's a Greyhound set, 60-1323. They indicate 50 in stock, so if you're interested it might be a good opportunity to grab a couple.

thanks Mike, I'll have to grab a set.  I'm avoiding doing the greyhound at the moment until I can nab a spare body so I can screw it up lol.the scary part is the boiler is the easy part.  it's my big a$$  hands trying to mask a straight line to get the dark grey band on the tender that's always the critical part.  I've done one of Jason's castings in two tone if you look back at my first pictures.  it didn't turn out too horribly bad

Still need to decal the last two numbers on the number boards but it's close to done. I'm not liking the smoke box weathering. I might have gone a tad heavy. How do the cab numbers and tender decals look now Jason, Richie, and mike? Now the question is with or without smoke lifters? Looks amazing, Adam. Agreed about the lifters.

Good work with the numbers. Doesn't look "off" like it did as 836.
