Is there, or has there ever been, such a thing as an actual Railwire calendar?

...(And of course, some poor souls, probably the moderators, would get the thankless job of choosing the 12 photos and then being castigated because they didn't pick this one or that one).

Hmm... of course, I'd
have to be in it...

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.
"It works! It works!"

If that calendar has the photo captioned
"we are not that board" in it, I'd buy it.

( I have to add .... keep the price reasonable, I am cheap after all)

It would be cool.

EDIT:
A 10 second web search just looking at Vista Print shows that they would be about $8 a piece, and about $6.44
if the quantity hit 100.  Hmmmm.....

I actually toyed with the idea of creating a calendar using some of these images and throwing it out there as a free download for asshats. The online images are too low-res for a quality print job, but you could make something that could function as a computer desktop image.

If the PTB would like to explore the idea of doing an actual calendar (and if the contributors are amenable), I'll offer to pull it together. I'm not a graphic artist per se, but I've been doing that kind of work for the better part of 30 years.

I would think you could move 100 calendars at $10 each and raise a few hundred bucks to support the site.

I'm sure photo resolution won't be a problem.  I would hope that with images as good as these, everybody
has the original camera files that are higher resolution.  For a big 12" calendar page sheet, yeah,
you'll want at least a 300 dpi image.

Well, like I said, this somehow has to be voted on to choose 13 images.  (one for each month,
and one for the cover).

I think the thing we need to do if people want this (and I think it's a great idea, by the way) is
start a polling thread, just let people vote, and leave any tie breakers up to the moderators.

Jim, are you able to put the images together, perhaps with a nice Railwire logo in the corner,
and on the cover, and actually get them printed somewhere?

I sure can, and it would be my pleasure. I will need the original photo files, and it would be nice to include a sentence or two from the creator of each shot. I'll also check my usual vendors and see if I can get a better price.

Here's the back page of a calendar I did a few years ago for a group of radio stations I was working at. (Sorry about the quality of the image. Just a quick scan of the one copy I kept for my files.)

(I originally posted a composite of several images of scantily clad women, but removed it for fear of offending anyone. No nudity, but certainly risque.)

That was a fun project too.  :D

Anyway, I was thinking of something similar -- heavy on the eye candy, with the calendar part nearly incidental. Thoughts?

There are already about 35 images in this thread. But can we be sure the artists would be willing to allow their image to be used? Do we need to start a new thread, specifically for calendar submissions? If so, can the first entry be an editable poll, so additional names can be added as they submit?

Or maybe the best thing to do is have one thread purely for submissions: one photo per person. A second thread containing the poll could be created after submissions close.

Oh, golly, to be picked for the Railwire calendar would be better than making the cover of MR.

I agree wholeheartedly..........
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

Anything I post is open for use.

You could always do multiple pictures per month too, if the resolution isn't goo enough for a full calendar page.  More RW porn per month!

I vote for plan "b":  one thread for submissions, set a deadline, and then vote after submissions close in
a separate polling thread.
Otherwise, how can people choose before they see all the entries?

The whole thing is completely insecure and unscientific.  After all, nobody has any proof that any of the photos are theirs, nor can we keep people from "campaigning" or otherwise stuffing the ballot box.  I'm just
hoping we can trust each other enough to do a calendar.   :)

I would not use any of the photos that have already been posted here.  None of them are likely
hi-res versions.    After the voting closes, the winners can email
the hi-res files directly to you.

I like the idea of putting a few lines of description on each one.

As for making a point for N-scale, while the images are fantastic I'd also like to nominate any of John Colombo's sound installation YouTube videos, e.g.
/>
For me the first N-scale epiphany was discovering alternatives to code 80 rail, but the real eye-opener was seeing first-gen diesels with decent sound running at realistic speeds.
