DeLuxe November 2014 Announcements - New 40' Container

Apparently announced at Trainfest, DeLuxe have announced a new 40' standard height, sheet and post container model, perfect for the 70s, 80s and early 90s intermodal loads:

http://www.deluxeinnovations.com/newannouncements.html

First run is Sealand, K-Line, Mitsui OSK, Japan Line, NYK and OOCL.

Expected delivery is 2nd Quarter 2015 which is encouraging.

An update on the eagerly anticipated Maxi-IV stack car is that the first two runs are currently in production and should ship to dealers in December (first run) and January (second run).

So some great news out of DeLuxe this month! Both releases will find a welcome home on my layout :-)

I'm pleased to see that DI is a going concern.  New container tooling is great news.

Yeah, this is really good. I would love to have a ton of APL containers. Those lasted in service forever.

Oh f**k, this is really gonna hurt! All of those, especially the OOCL.

Hope that release date is accurate, though...

On the subject of DI cans, anyone know if the earlier announced releases, specifically the OOCL 40' and the CAST 20', are likely to see the light of day? Feels like it's been years since announced.

You know what would be wild? If these were based on the old Interail tooling. I know some of it was damaged, but the plates are still sitting at DI, and repairing tooling may be easier than starting from scratch. If this is the case, we may see a wide variety of doors and ends.

I was going to ask if they were the same as the reefers but without the reefer detail at the end.
But yours is a very interesting question.

OK, I'll ask...I know it's not just DI but all those that manufacture containers.
Why are these things so damned expensive?  They aren't on a chassis, there are no wheels or other hard to manufacture parts.

Is it just the printing?

I'm just glad that I model an era that does not require filling trainloads of cans.

Yeah, China is getting very expensive for very small run items.

But what about 1968 or '69?  When did 40' containers start hitting the rails?

Some recent releases have me thinking of bumping into 1971 but then I get into the BN era and that I'm not sure I like so much.

40 ft containers were around in the late 60s, but as far as I know they were all outside-post designs.

I'd be tempted by some of the new models, but the DI website says "late 70s", and I model 1974.  Does anyone have a specific date for any of these?

This is good! Can anyone ID when the paint schemes debuted?

Based on my photo collection the schemes existed by the dates below, and could have been earlier.  Not accounting for smaller details which may have changed, just talking about the overall scheme.  When I say 'lasted through xx' I mean that apparently that was still the scheme for new boxes through that time.  Older boxes in any of these schemes may still be around today.

Japan Line - 1974    lasted through the 80s
K-Line - 1974   This general scheme is still used on K-Line reefers, usually with white background nowadays.
Mitsui OSK - maybe 1974, definitely by 1983   lasted through the 90s
Sea - Land 1981   lasted through 1999 Maersk-Sealand merger
NYK - 1989
OOCL - don't really have anything on this.  Probably sometime in the 80s.  It is still the present day OOCL corporate logo.

Hope at some point we can get Seatrain and Showa.  Or undecs for those.   :)
