Micro Trains conversion question for Atlas/Kato RS11

Having recently picked up an RS11 which someone screwed MT couplers to the walkway, and trimmed the trucks, I am in need of MT's conversion.
Their chart lists an 1152 but the online store shows an 1150.
Which is correct?
Fifer's and others list the 1152 for the RS3, as does MT's chart along with the RS11, however, Model Train Stuff shows the 1150 clearly listed for RS11.
Clear as mud.

1150 is the RS11 pilot while the 1152 is the RS3 pilot. Both will work on the engine. I think the main difference was a slightly different footboard and MU house detail.

You should check with Atlas to see if they have an extra Chinese-made RS11 walkway/handrails with the built-in pilot.  The Japanese-made body should fit the deck.  You also could ask Atlas if they still have the original walkway/handrails, which then would eliminate the need to fill those current screw holes in the deck.

The rails/walkway are already on the way. Ordered from " That Train Place " on ebay. Brand new, I was actually surprised to find it.

The MT conversion is a kit specific to the locomotive.  It includes a pilot, a slot into which you screw the coupler in the  pilot, screws and some other stuff.  You trim the coupler box tongues from the trucks, glue the pilot piece to the front deck, screw the coupler and box into the pilot.  The pilot piece slides behind something so that you do not need to rely on the strength of the glue joint if you want to pull a longer train up a grade.  There is a part of the deck that actually takes most of the stress.

And yes, the RS-3 and RS-11 kits are interchangeable.  There are some subtle differences in the pilot, but if you use the three foot rule, few will notice.

I just did an RS3 conversion last week...first one in years.  The pilot glues to the bottom of the walkway, drill a hole through the walkway for the screw, slip the coupler in, install the screw.  Yes, the screw does go above the walkway, but just barely.  Once it's painted, it'll be hard to tell it's there.

Glues in?  I don't recall ever attempting to glue any of those conversions to the slippery Delrin walkway. Glues don't really work for that.  The fit of that pilot adapter is quite good - no need for glue. The single 00-90 screw will be quite sufficient to hold the coupler and pilot adapter in place.  The screw can be cut (or ground with a cutoff wheel in a Dremel tool) flush with the deck.

The glue just holds it until the hole is drilled and the screw is installed.  Yes, I know that the glue won't be permanent on the delrin.  It just helps out.

Before I mangle a new set, maybe I should see if it will line up with the holes in the old set. Or not.

Since each end has a hole drilled in a different location - probably not.    Once you fit the adapter in the pilot you can use the screw hole in it as a guide for drilling the hole in the deck.

Or, pick up from Atlas a Chinese-made walkway/sidesill assembly that already has integrated pilots and see if that will solve your dilemma.  The parts aren't expensive and worth seeing if it is possible.

Back in 1993 when I got into N scale I superglued the MTL pilots into my GP 30/35s and U25-Bs and did not drill holes through the deck for screw clearence as the screws are not that long.Pilots are still in place with no signs of coming loose.(maybe the CA was stronger in the "old" days ?)

Oh yeah,it is also keeping the pilots firmly mounted in my Bachmann Dash 8-40Cs too.

The GP30/35 came with body mount couplers so a 1015 would work without a pilot adapter.  The U25B was like the U30C in that it had a tall enough walkway that the MT adapter was thicker.  This allowed the screw to stay only in the adapter and the adapter itself was glued directly to the underside of the sill.  The material that both the sill and the pilots were made accepted super glue, unlike delrin.

There is no need to go through the deck, cut the screw.
Drill and tap a 00-90 hole in a 1/16" brass bar stock.
Screw the 00-90 screw in so that the excess is through the bar stock and cut it off with a razor saw - dress it up with a file and you are good to go.

WRONG !! The ATLAS/Kato GP30/35 and U28-B all had truck mounted couplers.
