I was very disappointed in the CDROM version (and I let Pam know about it).  The PDF versions of the issues are simply collections of page scans (bitmaps). That means you can't copy/paste any of the text, or even do any searches. Not very useful other than looking at the scans and reminiscing. To me digital version of printed publications should be searchable to be really useful.  I hope that in the future, the PDFs will be produced from the original digital file the magazine was printed from. That way, they will be fully searchable.

As far as the first issue goes, one of them has u18 on the cover.

This is a good point.
Feedback can be helpful.

Some feedback I gave years ago was that when the first CD came out, the files were named by months.
Which effectively meant that the organization was about useless on a computer.

I suggested a coherent file naming system.  Like 2014_03.pdf
That way, when I have a directory of a lot of the PDFs, they would be in order of publication and be easier to find a particular file.

They listened and changed the naming convention for the next CD.

As for digital files, remember that it wasn't Pam's company back then.
She may not have had the digital files.

But I think that's good feedback.
Digital text file PDFs are better than scanned image PDFs.

Hope they make changes in the future, but even so, I think the CDs are worth it.
I have all 4.

And looking forward to the 5th before too long, maybe.


Ohhh.  And as far as the cover with U18B goes, that wasn't among the first N-Scale mag covers, it was the first cover when they changed ownership from Hundman Publishing to Platinum Rail.
I think it was the Sept/Oct 2006 issue.
Only a very select number of people received that issue though.

For most people, it was a missing issue.  Too bad, it was a good one.

No collection is totally complete without BOTH inaugural issue and the Sept/Oct 2006 issues.

I've got all four disks too. And love them. I just don't have the space to keep all the magazines anymore. And having them electronically is so much better.
And I can do searches on the PDF's with windows 7. The only problem I have is getting ads in the same search results. And it's pretty easy to print out an article.
Has anyone tried the Model Railroader disc? You have to load a separate software to read their PDF files. The interface sucks and just try zooming into a particular image/drawing.

Can't wait for the next disc!

Hmmm... I wonder how Adobe Reader in Windows 7 is able to recognize text in bitmapped scans.  I'll have to try that (last I tried was in XP).  What version of Adobe Reader are you using?

Ron, I have the issue with Amtrak on it (I subscribed to N-Scale Magazine from the start).  I would have to dig through the issues (in the attic) to see if I have the Sept/Oct 2006 issue. But I'm not all that worried about missing few issues - somehow I don't see N-Scale Magazine issues becoming a high-price collectible. I kept mine for the articles.
