Atlas PRR SD9 announced

I see these are being released, which is good cause I need some. However, is that PRR artwork correct, two keystones on one side? I've seen, one keystone and Pennsylvania on the side and one keystone and nothing on the side, but not the artwork Atlas is showing. Must be a really late scheme though, if correct. Atlas wouldn't foobie the PRR, would they?

Yes, it's correct.  Very late paint job in anticipation of the PC merger.

Based on the pictures and text in the Withers Diesel Locomotive Pictorial book, I'd say the Atlas model depicts a unit that  was probably repainted very early 1966 since it's the late PRR scheme but still has the original number series (7600).  Between July and Sept 1966 most SD9's were renumbered into the 6900 series for the PC merger.  PRR bought 25 units in late 1957 for hump yard pusher service and divided them up mainly between 3 yards in Columbus, OH, Enola, PA and Altoona, PA.  By 1960 most had been transferred to the enlarged and upgraded Conway, PA yard with a couple left in Enola and Columbus and none in Altoona.  The 7601 and 7605 were in the group of 8 assigned to Altoona and later moved to Conway.

That's what keeps me from getting this new batch... They weren't seen outside of the big yards.  I have friend who engineered on the Buffalo line from '55 until '97 and he never saw an SD9 come through.

I'd probably get a GP in that scheme. Not an SD though, because, exactly, they were only used in such a few uses.

At least it's not an SD7.  PRR only had TWO.  Bought special for a high grade line in southern Indiana.  One was kept in Indianapolis and swapped with the other as needed for repairs and maintenance.

Thanks for the picture and all the other info. I was looking forward to getting the new mechanism, so I guess a re-decal job is in order. Thank God for DGLE,  :D  allows for hacks like me to play along.

The SD9s used in hump service at Enola sometimes did get some mainline use.  Seen photos of them with locals and used on the Reading/PRR job between yards.

Later during PC9(probably after the SD38's where acquired) and early CR, the 2 in Columbus were used as the terminal helpers getting trains up the grades north and east out of downtown from what I've read and seen on video.  They are kinda neat though being a six axle loco that won't look horrible on tight radius curves that some of us have to model due to space constraints.

Wouldn't mind a gp7 just because the Horseshoe Curve has one on display... wish I could afford to model PRR, and heck even CR in addition to NS but the thought of it makes me hurt in the wallet.

Actually... that's a bastardized GP7. It's actually a Conrail (or probably Paducah) GP10 or 11. You can tell by the big air filter box on the long hood and the plated over removed dynamic brake parts.
