Sheesh. Nice to know we can nitpick it to death before the preproduction samples are even displayed.

Ah, I'm not complaining.... unless they fail to make a mid-phase unit. Oh, and it better have flexcoils. Those Conrail SD40-2s went everywhere after CSX and NS took over.

Ohh... and high hood units. They need to do high hood versions too.

Wow, just announced and bashed to death already. What's next, bashing imaginary releases prior to announcement?

I'm just wanting the F7's to finally get here (although not before my tax refund does).

I will probably get the CSX ones and if they make the new FEC scheme, oh boy.

In HO the CSX and NS units they are doing are ex-Conrail with the Flexicoil trucks.

You obviously haven't been on here long, it's the official sport of TRW.

Lets just look at the numbers. almost every major road has had an SD40 somthing. Anyone that models after 1972 needs them. I model modern day and i have over 50 SD40-2 and i am always looking for more. I have 5 of the IM SD40-2 and after i added weight to them so they would pull better they run great. I have had problems with the fine hand rails but that is what you get when you want fine hand rails just be careful when you handle them and you will not have a problem.

There is a reason for it. Maybe call it no faith that IM can pull off a high fidelity model. Especially one that deserves to be done right. The SD40-2 is the Holly Grail of EMD models. Intermountain took a prototype an almost holly grail prototype the Tunnel motor and completely turned it into a heaping pile. The attention to detail in the IM Tunnel motor is at or below the Bachman standard. I would say that no other N-Scale manufacturer is going to even think about producing a Tunnel motor now because N-Scale is not afforded the luxury that HO has. It is time we as N-Scalers demand the same quality that HO is given. But instead we give thanks for the crap that is given to us and told to just be happy you got it. I for one would much rather NOT have it produced at all if it is not going to be given the proper attention.

The SD40-2 was the quintessential work horse of Americas railroads in the late 70's and 80's. It deserves better than IM. Kato did a pretty decent job on it. Albeit the hood is a bit wide, but it is and still WILL be far better than ANYTHING IM offers. I am willing to bet on it.

My open letter to Intermountain.

Dear Intermountain Railway Co.

Exit the N-Scale locomotive market. I beg of you. Stop NOW before you ruin anymore good prototypes.

Sincerely,

Brian Banna

[quotehonestly, how many SD-whatevers do we need from how many mfgs?][/quote]

Only one manufacturer produces the SD40-2. Once every couple a few years we get a new number or 2 on the same old roadnames and even though they did Pan Am units and Wiscy Southern which they had not done before, it's kind of stale. IM has done well with the F units and I think they will do well with this, and like the F7's, it'll take them awhile to get thru all the roads and phases.

My IM tunnel motor is not a heaping pile- that is pure hyperbole.  It is imperfect, but I refuse to throw the baby out with the bathwater.  IM has produced a long list of innovative and iconic models (locos and freight), the Tunnel series is one of them, and now they are committing to the SD40-2.  They made a lot of models out of that Tunnel tooling and made non-generic models possible.  How many versions of tooling do other companies do?  I think we have reasonable expectations that we will see those high nose and other variants of the SD40-2, because IM has a history of doing just that.  I give them credit where it is due, and outright reject the contempt some people feel they need to heap on this company.   Where that venom comes from is beyond me.

N scale would be poorer without IM and asking them to exit n scale modelling is near to the most pointless thing I have read on this thread.

I don't have any skin in this game, but I sure see the importance of another company putting out an important model like the SD40-2.

Great attitude! Lets discourage any manufacturers from trying new things! We don't need innovation or new products! We can make do with the same old offerings we've always gotten from previous manufacturers. Why should we expect companies to grow and evolve? They should all start out have millions of dollars in capitol they can through at projects to come up with the same mediocre results. There has never been a factory locomotive that I thought was worth not tearing apart, detailing and repainting. In all honesty, the IM SD40-2W was one of the best looking factory N Scale diesels I have seen. Was it perfect, no, but it was a step in the right direction.

My open letter to IM:

Dear Intermountain Railway Co.

Thanks for investing your money in developing new products for our overly small market. I look forward to seeing the new products and judging them on their merits.

Sincerely,
