Intermountain SD40-2 !!11!

What, no Canadian roads 

There are enough differences between the EMD and GMD SD40-2s to warrant a separate shell in my opinion.  Yes, this is the same mechanism as under the SD40-2W.  There were nuerous significant variations in SD40-2 production over its long history of manufacture so hopefully we will see tooling alterations to cover those.

I was pretty happy with my CN SD40-2. I thought the details (dustbin notwithstanding) was pretty good. Certainly good enough to keep up with Atlas. The detail was not quite as sharp, but certainly not what I would call bad. They are leaps better than their SD45-2 and those were better than the second run of SD40/45T-2. Each generation shows a sizable improvement so I am hopeful these will turn out OK.

IM, Please do a true mid-phase unit with the proper nose. Please retool the SD45-2 chassis rather than grind the ends like on the CN SD40-2s.

It says all new tooling, so I'm going to take them at their word for now. I assume this means no re-purposing of other tooling, period.

I hope this does not offend anyone, but in my opinion Intermountain motive power is pure junk. I would almost be willing to put Bachmann ahead of them. Their F units are OK, but I will still take a Kato F unit and spruce it up myself over an IM. So I am not holding my breath that this so called "All New Tooling" will spring forth something worth a glance at.

Now I might buy a tunnel motor just for the shell and see if I can stretch a newer sprung Kato 40-2 chassis to power it. That has been bumping around in my mind for a while.

Nice to see IM making some new things but I won't be buying one. I've had a few tunnel motors and they've left a bad taste in my mouth.

Well if they were gonna copy kato's road names from a year ago they could have at least thrown in a CNW for good measure. Still, I think I'll buy one, if only to compare with Kato and because I just plain like the SD40-2.

I wouldn't have bought any, if they didn't do the ICE. Perfect for my layout.

There is always a second run, so I wouldn't sweat the no CR or UP, etc.  As to Canadian roads, they probably figured the wide cabs were enough to satisfy right?

Well I was excited to order an NS unit but after reading through the bad experiences, may wait to see how they work out for others.

I wouldn't have a problem with ALL of the manufacturers making a version of the SD40-2 (FVM and Atlas????)... I like em.
