Although the Reading had articulateds that served as helpers, most of the big power in the Northeast were single frame locomotives. Northerns, such as the reading T1 or Lehigh Valley "Wyoming's" were common. Like the Pennsy the larger types tended to be ten coupled Texas or Santa Fe types such as Lehigh Valley R class #4056.,.,.

More like big and beautiful. I have always found a steamer to be an amazing piece of equipment that was impressive in it's own right but also only as good as its engineer and fireman working together to get the most of it's potential.

If you want to talk ugly, I've seen pics of larger locomotives with smaller drivers.

They look like they're tip-toeing!

I think it was the D&H or DL&W that had them.

Hey now... the Q1 is a unique beast built out of necessity during WWII by the Southern Railway. Simple in design, quick and easy to build. (Dapol makes an N-gauge model. it's even DCC ready.)
Since the SR occupied the Southeast corner of the UK, they tended to take some heavy hits from bombers.
