Used by several armies all around the world. VietNam APC's had ACAV shields around the TC's hatch. In Germany they were bone stock. Israeli's used them also.

Wikipedia says:  "The M113 is a fully tracked armored personnel carrier manufactured by BAE Systems. The vehicle was first fielded by United States Army's mechanized infantry units in Vietnam in April 1962"

While the Australian Army had the M113 in Vietnam they have made lots of mods to them.

They have fitted a number of armoured vehicle turrets to them. The first was a turret off the Saladin ARV then UK Scorpian turret which was used as a medium Recce Vehicle and a Fire Support Vehicle and now the have stretched the vehicle and added an extra road wheel so that they can carry a full section of cav troops. The stretch take the vehicle from 5 road wheels to six.

The link above while give you and idea of what has been done. The Saladin Turreted vehicle was used in Vietnam and had a 76mm gun which gave a Cav Squadron a little bit more fire power. Reports were that the VC and NVA did not like the Beast as they were called because the gun fired HE, White Phos, AP, Fleshettes and grape shot. Big Hole on a little vehicle with a bit more punch than a .50 cal.

And still in use in one form or another today.   1/35 scale military models is another of my hobbies and I have at least a half doen different varieties of the M113.

Bout to say they were in production by 64 for the Viet invasion.

These and the M109 are the only military vehicles I have.

Early versions were gasoline powered and went up like a Zippo lighter when hit.  Quickly switched to diesels.

 First ones used in combat were in '62,but went into service in 1960..Still in use...

I have another question about the M113 APC model. Where can I get itsy-bitsy star decals to put on the sides? Since the real APCs were a sliver under 16' long, I calculate an N scale model would be about 1-3/16" long.
