Atlas NE-6 Caboose and Body-Mounted 2004 Couplers?

I got an Atlas NE-6 caboose today, but it didn't have couplers. I figured, "that's okay. I have a ton of Accumate couplers to put on it."

Ha ha, did Atlas surprise me. There is an odd, 2-diameter boss on the coupler lid that is too fat at the bottom for the Accumates I have. I guess Atlas makes a unique coupler for this caboose.

Anyhow, I went to Micro-Trains coupler conversion charts and found the NE-6 caboose. Here is what the chart said about using their 2004 body-mount couplers:

Stock
Remove Coupler box and cut
the mounting bosses from the 
under-side of porch of to
accept the body mount.  Trim
screw flush with the top of the
porch and touch up with paint.

Uhh... what about that screw? Does Micro-Trains give complete directions with the 2004 coupler pack?

Uhh, we didn't use a special coupler on the NE-6. Did you try installing the Accumate? The coupler should only fit over that first boss on the cover. The second boss acts as a shim to maintain the coupler height. The box was big because at one time, you could pop the Rapido couplers in them.

I tried putting the Accumates on the smaller diameter, but it looked like the coupler shanks were higher than the boss. I was using my Opti-Visor at the time, and it seemed the Accumates would rub and not be able to turn from side to side properly. Still, I tried to fit them on, but then I couldn't coordinate holding the couplers in place while putting the lid back on. I got frustrated and... Anyhow, I followed Micro-Trains instructions to cut the bosses off so I can install the 2004 couplers I ordered. No going back now  :facepalm:

On the brighter side, I did buy another NE-6 caboose on eBay today (WITH Accumates installed), and I'm bidding on another caboose too.

I wrote an article in the July/August 2005 N Scale Railroading that includes mounting MTL couplers on the NE6 caboose.
