I knew of the wax, just not of the ramifications of it. I don't see anywhere where orientation is specified, I assume its up to the guy running the machine? Do they do it the same way each time or is it a grab bag that two items ordered a week apart might be printed different?

The way I understand this to work is that Shapeways loads up the FUD printer's tray with objects from multiple customers (until they fill the tray).  They can reorient the parts to be able to pack as many printouts as possible.

Okay... Who's the wise guy  :o

These turned up in the 'bay. Anybody have any idea who's they are? They are quite a bit better looking than what I was expecting to get from mine, I won't waste my time if the person responsible for these can be located and persuaded to make some more.

I have no idea who made them, but they are from a guy that was in a club in Greiz, Germany the way it looks.
When they popped up I searched everywhere I could think of and came up with nothing, even on shapeways pages.
I emailed the seller to try and find out who designed them and to see if could get some leads but haven't heard anything back yet.

Those units on eBay were evidently a one off deal, so back to the original plan I guess.

Some mods were made to the shape of them, they are a touch bit narrower, shorter, and the flares are not as wide. No idea if it's accurate at all, but based on several photos, the old Details West part it's loosely based on, and some guesurements on an Atlas SD shell the revised shape *should* have nice proportions to the rest of it I think. I decided 3 would likely be a lifetime supply for me, and also moved the iffy exhaust stacks to the outside of the tree per peteski's suggestion.

I uploaded it Shapeways and ordered one. It passed their "preliminary check", so all my t's must be crossed and i's dotted anyway. We'll see now what they say about actually printing it, and what comes in the mail if they do...

Thanks for the offer spookshow, but I'm kind of enjoying this so far. If nothing usable comes out of it I may take you up though!  :scared:

I don't know if the JNJ filter is modeled after a different prototype or if it's just plain inaccurate, but in any case it doesn't look like it'd really work for what you want to do anyway.

I'll definitely be in the market for a few of yours though if they turn out good!  :D

or someone should make all varieties...

I think that is a Farr Air Filter Box, not a Horst.

I think you're right, that one is a Farr. It doesn't look like it would be too difficult to guess the dimensions of it, the hardest part might be getting a flush fit around the corner of the roof line radius. Though a guy handy with a tooth pick and some sand paper could probably get a rough shape dialed in.

Well the exhaust stacks are a no-go. I drew them the bare minimum thickness, which was arguably too thick, but Shapeways says their tiny shape left unsupported won't go. Reupped a new design sans exhaust, we'll see how that goes. I may possibly be able to get a good impression off a shell to try the fine art of resin casting, if that doesn't work I'm not sure what to do about the exhaust stacks.
