I'm amazed more modelers don't have laser cutters, CNC routers and 3D printers now days.  They're almost too cheap to ignore.  You just need CAD/3D CAD skills, which are more or less just time and practice.

I guess I get that, but it's really not as difficult as they make it out to be.  It's similar to learning to solder or use machine tools.

Oh, I think that 3D CAD design is quite a bit more complex and harder to learn than soldering (speaking from both, soldering and some basic CAD experience).  Yes, I know that CAD objects are all just bunch of rectangles, circles, and lines, but figuring out how to create a complex-shaped object from those basic shapes is not very intuitive to many brains (I know it is to me).  Soldering is dealing with physical objects, while CAD is dealing with virtual objects on a computer screen Can't touch those until you can print them. Not the same at all.

Plus to me it takes much more time to get good in 3D CAD (I'm still nowhere near being there) than it takes to get decent in soldering.  And hobby time is usually at premium.  Not making excuses, I just think the comparison is not quite fitting.

3D CAD is much more difficult than 2D for Laser Cutting. But what keeps me from the 3D printing world is all the work that seems to need to be done after the print job is done with the job, especially with lower end less expensive 3D printers. However, with the lack of decent in scale, knickknacks, cars, trucks and such, a 3D printer is getting closer and closer to being on my desktop.

I have just found this post about the (Scratch sketch sets in N scale). I now have a question about them and that is can the templates be increased to make them to use for HO scale buildings. If so, anybody out there done this or have any suggestions on how to do it. I was thinking that when I print them out just change the print percentage to 200%. I am not sure that it would work.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Gary created these in N Scale - to convert the plans to HO, you would use 1.837 as the scaling factor .. there are some spread sheets here:

I dunno, modern CAD software is really easy to pick up. I hadn't really used any CAD tools since learning some SolidWorks about 20 years ago, yet I downloaded Fusion 360 recently and it took me no time at all to get a printable model designed. After only a few weeks I feel very comfortable using it now.

In actuality, for me the bigger barriers are 1. I don't have the space for all of the equipment 2. I don't want to have to clean up all the mess. The CAD part is the the easiest part.

Gary Kalil (August 14, 1942 – February 22, 2024)

Gary Joseph Kalil, a devoted Navy veteran, beloved dad, loving husband, and cherished grandfather, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2024, with his family by his side. Gary was born on August 14, 1942 in Michigan City, IN to Edith and Joseph Kalil. Gary attended Michigan City Elston High School.

Gary proudly served in the United States Navy as a fighter pilot, fearlessly navigating the skies in an A-4 Skyhawk and F-11 Tiger, skillfully landing on aircraft carrier flight decks using the iconic tailhook system. His decorated service, dedication, and bravery, including time served during the Vietnam War, will forever be remembered and honored.

Beyond his military career, Gary found joy in various passions and hobbies. He delighted in meticulously crafting and operating his model train set, finding solace in its rhythmic movements. An avid supporter of his family, Gary could often be found cheering from the sidelines or front row for his children and grandchildren. In quieter moments, he found peace in birdwatching and cherished the simple pleasure of spending quality time with loved ones.

Gary shared a deep bond with his wife, Brenda, of 51 years, with whom he embarked on countless adventures, including memorable road trips to distant destinations like Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and around the Great Lakes. Together, they created a lifetime of cherished memories filled with love, laughter, and companionship.

Gary will be dearly missed by his devoted wife, Brenda Kalil, his loving children Heather (Kevin) Penziol, Shane (Molly) Kalil, and Brooke (Wil) Kalil-Silva, and his adoring grandchildren Rylee (Joshua) Kruck, Reghan Penziol, Tristan Kalil, Eilley Kalil, Liam Kalil, and Xander Kalil-Silva. He is also survived by his sister, Gayle Mason, of Mineral Wells, Texas. He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and unwavering devotion to family.

A celebration of Gary’s remarkable life will be held on Sunday, March 10th, at 1:00 PM at the VFW in Laporte. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dunes Hospice, their care and compassion was a blessing to Gary and his family.3

When you think of model railroaders, you don't immediately leap to carrier fighter pilot. Sounds like a life well-lived.
