Question About Build Date for Micro-Trains 60' Box Car

I was under the impression that all (non Greenville) MTL double plug door rivet side 60' box cars were built in the 70s. However, I have a Grand Trunk box car that says it was built in 1967. On the box, the history of the car says Berwick Forge & Fabricating built it in 1967 and repainted in 1986. I hope that's true, because I have about a dozen such cars that I can't sell. I'd love to be able to use them on my future 1971 layout.

Hmm... give 'em to me.
I'll use 'em for target
practice...

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.
"It works! It works!"

I decided to try to find a photo of the car I have, and I came close:

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=263887

My MTL car is #384606, and the photo above is 384600.

I noticed right away that the MTL car's side sill is noticeably different, and the car side is slightly different. Now all I have to do is decide if the MTL car is close enough to use on a 1971 layout. Rats.

Hmm... Kiz'll be out of
action for the rest of
the day...

As for the built date I believe the waffle sides were around 1978 and the smooth side ones were late 60's but I could very well be wrong.

I checked Spookshow's site, and it says these MTL cars were built in the 60s and 70s, depending on type:

http://www.spookshow.net/freight/mt60excess.html

I've decided that I'm going to repaint all mine for my fantasy Kisatchie, Gulf & Northern Railroad and say they were built in 1970 by the KG&N shops. That means I can salvage 10 of the cars I was trying to sell.

Don't worry about the GTW car being blue. It's gonna get stripped and repainted too.

Hmm... better put my
BB gun away...

Just to clarify, the "brown before 1971" rule does not apply to GTW's 86' auto parts boxcars. They were all delivered in blue through the 1960s.

I never was able to figure out what specific prototype Micro-Trains based that model on. Going by the paint schemes they've offered, said model seems to have been used as a stand-in for a whole lot of different cars (and as Kiz has discovered, many of which have noticeable differences from the model).

Cheers,
-Mark

I have a Union Pacific box car too, and it's supposed to be a Greenville car as far as I can tell. Maybe Micro-Trains will redo the car on their new Greenville box car shell.

Hmm... Maybe...
