While I am unsure of whether or not the locomotive itself would be of use to my freelanced lines the tender on the other hand might be.

Can someone explain to me about the "large dome"/"small dome" detail?

Sand dome - the second "lump" from the front on top of the boiler.

The sample at the show looked quite nice!!! The USRA 55 ton looked good also. ALL the new stuff looked better than in the pictures.

Hmmmm.  Eastern road.

They probably won't sell many.

There are two large steam locomotives that I would buy.  This is one of them.  The other is a P&LE A-2a, ALCo's  last domestic steam.  In fact, I am surprised that no one has done it,

The release of this thing must be based on the concept that big steam sells, even though it is specific to only one road.  Witness Athearn's success with the 4-8-8-4 and IM's (was it them?  It was somebody) success with the cab forward.  Witness Kato's success with the GS-4.  Then , there is the success that Bachpersonn had with its re-tooled ATSF 4-8-4.  B-mann may hang a few roadnames on that one, but when you look at it, there is no mistaking it for anything BUT All Tramps Sent Free.

This is a first, non-USRA big steam specific to an eastern road and I DO hope that it pays off for B-mann.  Bachmann also deserves a doff of the cap for releasing a few different versions.  As some have pointed out, B-mann could probably put a few different shells on the chassis, as well.

I do applaud B-mann for what it has done in small steam, the 4-6-0 and 2-6-0.  They also deserve a tip of the hat for average sized steam; their 2-8-0 IS one of the standards against which all N scale steam is measured.     I do hope to see the eight wheeler that they did in HO as well as the climax.  I  might even hope that they can produce a superior operating 0-6-0T similar to what they did in HO (with a live caboose or boxcar that you can connect by micro-plugs).  B-mann seems to be the only one doing small steam, these days.  MP was supposed to upgrade its small and average sized locomotives, but they have not appeared.  Athearn issues its two 1880s teakettles, from time to time, but they plan nothing new for that era.  Atlas has done two pretty good nineteenth century locomotives.  B-mann is the only one that seems to keep them coming.

I will buy one of these, things, as I am a B&O guy.  Still, it continues to puzzle me why big steam sells.  Most of us have smaller pikes where these things look silly going around thirteen inch curves and chasing their tails.  Even though they can hold all sorts of weight, sound and traction tyres and have better electrical contact than smaller power, they are still best suited to club layouts and N-TRAK.

So far, just day after the announcement, I have received requests for 8 of them from our shop and I haven't even sent out our customer newsletter to let people know of it. We have never had a loco with that type of response. I guess it doesn't hurt that we are in B&O country although these never ran near here. The funny thing is, people are asking for multiple loco's, not just one. They did double head these for some seriously long coal drags though.

I think a lot of the reaction is because this is the first accurate B&O steam loco ever produced in N scale, other than brass, and this one was never done in brass. I hope sales go well and we get a few more road specific B&O loco's. I know the HO ones went fast for us.

Oh, that looks mighty nice.  Yeah, I'll end up with two.

Brokemoto: big steam sells because it's . . . Big.  Impressive even in N scale, and watching all the drivers and valve gear working is fascinating.  It's history and big-ness and mechanical marvel that sells big steam.  So bring on the Allegheny and the 2-10-4 and, and, and (hyperventilating) all that REALLY BiG STEAM!

This was nearly big news for me, until I decided to go HO this past week....damn fine loco and I might just end up with one for the display cabinet.

Will it have traction tires? No point in running it if it can't pull anything.

Features include:
• DCC-equipped for speed, direction, and lighting
• die-cast boiler
• flywheel drive
• all-tender wheel pickup
• soft white LED headlight and backup light
• separately applied handrails and stanchions
• detailed backhead
• traction tire equipped
• chemically blackened wheels
• E-Z Mate®
Mark II couplers

Weight and Traction tires, a good combination for a strong puller.

FLYWHEELS?  in a BACHMANN ??  THAT is news.  One of the remarkable things about Bachpersonn steam has always been the gearing.  It was so good that it did not need flywheels.  This is not a criticism or  a complaint, just an observation.

The all wheels live tender is in keeping with Miranda's Maxim as explicated by ke:  "The poor performance of many N scale steam locomotives is often directly attributable to poor electrical contact."

With probably twenty four of the thirty two drivers live (one tyred axle per engine) plus all of the tender wheels, contact should NOT be a problem for this one.
