As with any model-to-prototype issue, you have to look at a case-by-case basis.

Are you saying that they have a builders photo that shows the roof?

Okay.  I haven't seen too many overhead builders shots pre-60's.  Regardless of anything else, I'll readily concede that this is probably the best way to sell this car.  And I don't know if the artwork shown means they will paint the ladder black with a grey step, but kudos to Atlas if they do or at least try.

I would think that the car will be decorated according to the current artwork, since the artwork has been modified a number of times.  The stirrups are gray in the builder's photo, while the ladders and side-grabs are black.

Looking at a consist as viewed from an overpass as on page 74, dated September 1956, you will see cars 4, 5 & 6 are Pacemakers. Car 4 & 5 roofs are pretty dirty and a darker shade of red that also matches up with the sides. This makes it less difinitive on those two. However, Car 6 is relatively cleaner and brighter (newer?) and its roof is most defintely the same color red as the sides. Not Black! Too bad they are too far back to determine door size or car number.

I'm in a similar boat, most of the PS1s I have, or intend to buy with the 2 upcoming releases, had A3 trucks as built. I figure I will end up with a nice collection of Atlas' S2a trucks which I can use for other projects.

FYI - for the Atlas USRA wood-sheathed and steel rebuilt boxcars that are equipped with the standard Bettendorf trucks, the Barber S-2-A trucks do lower the cars significantly but not quite enough.  The embossed ring on the bolster must be removed as well for the cars to sit at the correct height.  I then had to use the coupler spacer when mounting MTL #1015s, as they were slightly too high.  The same results should occur using BLMA's ASF A-3 trucks.



The end result is a good one.  The Micro-Trains USRA boxcars have a good appearance in general and there are two or three of my favorites from over the years that I have held onto such as the 3M double-sheathed boxcar, so I'll be trying this method with the ones I haven't yet lowered.

Bryan, that pic you posted is of an Atlas or MTL car?
I have two of the newer Atlas single-sheath boxcars and they came with Atlas Andrews trucks, I don't recall (doesn't mean I didn't!) having to grind away at the underframe, but I body-mounted MTZ 905 couplers. The Atlas car is closer to the PRR X26 series of cars, in comparison to the MTL car. I did change out the wooden doors for Youngstown doors, part #417009, which are a perfect fit and match a few pics I found of the X26 in service, 1950s.

You don't have to modify the Atlas car at all if it is equipped with Andrews trucks.

I have a Pennsy single-sheathed X26 in CK, one rebuilt in CK and another rebuilt in SK.  My wood X26 also has a steel door, but I could have sworn it came that way.  Maybe not, I don't remember, as it's been a while since that scheme was released.

UPDATE: Scott, are you sure you changed the door on the Atlas PRR model and not another?  Or did you paint/decorate an undecorated car?  I just checked the Atlas site - the initial release came with the steel door.

I just checked and you are right! It was an NYC car that I swapped out the doors. 
I did buy some undecorated bodies so that I could cut off the 5-5-5 ends for some X26C rebuilds I am planning.
