Made a little more progress on the Milwaukee Erie built project this week

Recently found out Richard and Casey Thomason are more or less my around the corner neighbors in Columbus, GA.  So, after seeing some of the more interesting things on their layout I decided to get started with my own scratch build as I gather supplies for projects stalled. 

I'll let you guess what these are - the first batch will have 5 of them, and I am planning to do 20-30 more over time.  It's a welcome relief to change up from working on locomotives:

Unless it's some kind of wood chip car I have no ideas.  It's too big for coal and I can't think of another low density load commonly carried in open cars.  Chicken feathers, maybe?  I've heard they used to be shipped in open hoppers in Virginia, but find that hard to believe.

I second wood chip car. Fairly common down in them parts, given all the pine forests and paper mills.

I got what I think is a final drawing for the block portion of my Freight House.  I'll probably go over it 10-20 more times before I'm sure of it, but in the meantime I need to find a way to simulate the cement block.

The only thing slightly photo worthy I've done all week is ballasting the tracks around the Scheissewasser Brewery complex.

I nearly spilled my coffee reading the brewery name. Not a nice name unless the beer is very bad tasting...

Your building is beautiful though.

Finally sat down this weekend to work on my Superliner cars.  I hate the coupler spacing so I started hacking and chopping the trucks and the coupler apart.  Finished two of the nine cars, had a good working system down, and stepped back to admire my work.  Then suddenly thought, "Uh oh.  Will these make it around a corner????"  Project came to a complete stop, until further testing this week....

Now that we're finally settled on our TDY, and UI was home with a sic kid this week (!), I managed to get going on two projects that have languished the last few months.

First, I' got back to building my  KCS GP40-1L, which is based on a prototype to which KCS ADDED dynamic brakes.  This is a test fit of the cut back walkway and rear framing:

Before you get too far ... If you're keeping these as 3500PD hoppers, you'll need to repaint them also.  With the exception of some small private companies in current times, these cars were exclusive to New York Central and its successors/subsidiaries PC, CR, MDT.  None of the railroads/companies that AHM offered on the original model were prototypical.

The plan was always to strip and repaint.  I think you actually sent to the decal set a while ago that I'll be using.   That said, do you think I coul dget away with stripping the decals and just redoing those?

Here is a scratchbuilt Log Car I did for a local HO scale club here in Medford.  This was laser cut from acrylic, weathered and marked in a local Mill's logo etc.  They liked it enough to order 50 more   They want to have these reflect shop built cars like those that were done over in Klamath Falls on the OC&E.  Different version, but the same concept.  Made it pretty much a snap together kit.





This is the big brother version of the Evans care we are doing at MTL.

Well not N.. and not Z either.   But it's a B&O standard tower (12 foot x 12 foot) done to test out some techniques for making cardstock structures.   Still needs a few details, a staircase, I'm hoping to use an etched brass stair from GMM plus some scratch.
