Yes, I have a few pictures on file of cars in the original red stencilling.  Some were taken by others and I would have to get permission to post them here, but I can post the following image as the original slide is now in my collection:




While we are at it, here is another car repainted and re-stencilled with the map logogram:




The stencilling layout for 2101-215 and 2116-2125 as delivered was virtually identical and I strongly suspect that the colour used for the original stencilling had everything to do with being tacked on to CN and CP orders respectively.

I can email you the other photographs illustrating the red lettering if you ned them.

I have managed to get some work done on my remaining cars each night this week, with the result that they are now just about ready to go to the paint shop.  Somehow four cars became six:




While looking at prototype photographs I realized that my cars were missing a fairly prominent detail, namely the end and side tackboards.  I made them out of .010" x .100" styrene 24" long with .015" x .020" additions each end for the vertical metal frame.  The side tackboards are now problem as they will be glued directly to the side of the car, but the end ones are mounted on two horizontal brackets between the vertical end posts.  Not quite sure how I am going to tackle that yet.

With all six cars built and up on trucks with couplers, it was time for a test run:




The cars ran up and down my helix with no problems.

Thanks Tim; that shot with the red lettering really caught me off guard... I want to do one of those..... now we figure out how without custom decals.... hmmm.... inkjet decals to the rescue ?

Pud, why not paint the side of the car red, then apply the CDS set, paint the car grey, and remove the CDS set with tape, revealing the red lettering. 

Quick and easy.

Plastruct makes small L and channel stock I  believe.  Also, K&S makes similar shapes in brass.  Or, Evergreen .010x020 stretched between the vertical posts with the tackboard secured to it probably would be strong enough to withstand normal handling.

The edges of the dry transfer lettering at that size is not clean enough to use that method.

If an inkjet printer is an option - it may be possible to buy the O scale version of the CDS set if it exists, scan it in, scale it down to N and output it in red to an inkjet onto decal paper.

A second 6 square hatch CPR slab side joins the fleet - this time a "script" livery and one that is in grain service' ergo the cleaner sides.



This was not as enjoyable as the first because CDS's transfers were a/ too big for the prototype (imagine that, a set of transfers made 15 plus years ago for a car that didn't exist are not perfect for it.... I'm so offended) and b/ the road numbers used on the set are bogus.... this resulted in some cut and paste from other decals and a lot more work than I'd anticipated.... oh well...



Far more moderate weathering as per the prototype but still the rusting of the roof and hatches has begun, omly a year or two after the re-paint.... She's coupled to an early CPR cylinderical and that cement fiend.....

For my fuel supply flatcar which has red stencilling on the fuel tanks we went the laser printer route.  The red turned out a little darker than I wanted for that application, but for these cars it would be a lot closer, so that is possible.  I am also waiting to hear what happens with the decals Central Hobbies are procuring.

Good work on the script car - the model certainly looks the part when finished, doesn't it?

I didn't have any brass or Plastruct stock on hand.  I tried using cuttings from stainless steel frets but I didn't have enough of that for six cars, so I went the .010" x .020" strip styrene route and it worked just fine.  I cut the strips long and glued them to the back of the tackboards top and bottom.  I then trimmed the right hand side tabs to the right length for adhering to the corner post, and left the left hand ones long.  After gluing them onto the car I trimmed the left hand tabs back to the vertical post.  Here is a close-up of a car illustrating the end and side tackboards:




So my fleet of six is now ready for the paint shop.  It was an enjoyable week getting these done.  I am hoping to be able to complete two cars in the original red scheme, three cars in the map scheme, and one car in the light green/dogwood logogram scheme.  I would like to have two cars for lime service to Fort St. John and four cars for grain service from Dawson Creek.  At a later date I might try two of the welded cars for a slightly different look.

I have to echo Pud's gratitude for getting these cars, and especially for Geoff's efforts to include the eight round hatch version for the PGE/BCR crowd.  These were an important series of cars on the north end as they were seen in grain, lime and dry sand service.  In the photograph of Brian Elchlepp's taken at Dawson Creek in 1985 and which is reproduced on page 204 of Route of The Cariboo, no less than four cars can be seen in the image.  It was this photograph which inspired me to model Dawson Creek.

The script car is a real "meritage" of decals and transfers.... The script "Canadian Pacific" CDS transfer is about 5% too big for the car, when compared with the prototype but it was closer than anything else i have in stock or know about so I burnished it onto decal film and used it.

The road numbers were wrong, way wrong so I hauled out a set of obsolete Northeast decal for a 50' CPR boxcar that has a lot of numerials and made up a road number I wanted. The numbers are very slightly too big and the spacing is slightly off but I will live with it. The data cames form yet another old set of Northeast decal set I had. ( I bought up 1,200 sets of Northeast n scale decals on E Bay many years ago - I really should list the collection if anyone needs some, I have all kinds of US roads I'll never use.... like anyone here model B&O, LV, ATSF, Southern or G&MO...?)

The "little fly poop" notices at the bottom of the car are from the CDS transfer set; I'd rather have had ledgible copy but I just dont have anything that small in decals and the car looks wrong without the notices... The fill line on the right hand side is from (yep, you guessed it) yet another Northeast decal set for CN boxcars; it's cut out of the data block.....

My orginal plan to do 4 such cars may be reduced if only to help retain my decaling sainity............

I've a load of parts on order, so I'll be able to start my builds, though if I get them painted, tginking that the TH&B pair will be fiest... have proper decals sets for those.

I have never seen a photograph of 2104, 2106 or 2111.  I seem to recall that 2108 was also grey with dogwood logogram but I do not seem to have a photograph to verify this. CDS N-676 will complete a car in the map logogram scheme as per 2101, 2109 or 2115.  2107 had a smaller map logogram.

Thank you Greg - I remember the car but couldn't recall where I had seen a picture.


Today in Central Hobbies I was shown preliminary artwork for the PGE/BCR decals for these cars so that is good news.  I will keep everyone update on their progress and eventual availability.
