Anything a standard covered hopper hauls... grain, cement, rock salt, sand, other granular minerals.

While that's true, the list of commodities hauled into the US may be more specific. 

I'll be doing a CN car to haul Potash.

Jason, nepheline syenite loaded on the Havelock Sub north east out of Toronto would have traveled Stateside. Anywhere glass or ceramics are manufactured, as well as plastics paint and powder coating mfg industries.

Regional or specialized rock is always a good candidate for single car loads to end up just about anywhere.

For example, ACL and SAL hauled a lot of Phosphate rock to other regions.  Another example would be Gypsum rock out of Fort Dodge, IA.  That would have had a pretty good reach because of it's use in making drywall.

The best part is the RR probably wouldn't be too specific on the train list and all of this would be written down as just "ROCK".  So you can have a lot of freedom with it.

Towards the end of it's life, the TH&B did a pretty good trade in phosphate rock up from Florida. Hauled a lot of loads to a fertilizer plant in Port Maitland on the Lake Erie shore. Based on the direction of travel of the train in the linked photo, came up through Detroit/Windsor, likely on CP. Have a few ACL, CSX, SAL, and SBD covered hoppers to represent that service.

Does that baggage car have end access doors like some of the PRR Cars. All round photos of the car would be great.

I have never seen a photograph of a PGE/BCOL slab side hopper south of the border.  The cars in cement and limestone service likely remained on home rails between Lime, Pavilion and the north, and the cars assigned to grain service would have travelled from the Peace region to the Fraser Valley and to Vancouver Island. 

The PGE/BCOL cars received a white stencil on a black rectangle upon the bottom side sills denoting the service to which the car was assigned.  A more obvious clue was the weathering - grain cars remained fairly clean whereas the cement and limestone cars became heavily stained.

I have seen photographs of CN and CP cars south of hte border but much further east than the Pacific Northwest.

There are man doors on either end.

Here's the express reefer after filling and priming:





The only issue with the reefer may be getting the "Canadian Pacific" on it - the top header appears to be not wide enough for existing decals... will check before painting and might have to extend the upper header slightly.

 and I forgot I also picked up the "A"series dining car... I kitbashed one years ago but this will blow that away ! - I haven't touched this yet....

The PRR had ends that while having Personnel Access doors also open out fully with three big hinges down each side. The were used for stage props and scenery and another type was used as horse boxes. In between times they were used as head end car.

I need the same thing; CPR Horse Cars, the 81' version had those very doors...I will hope that Geoff makes these one day for the CPR....

During a visit to Central Hobbies today I was informed that they now have the instruction sheets and jewel boxes so the slab side hoppers should start shipping soon.  Most of hte first batch is sold so Geoff has to make some more.

The first of the "goodies" is complete.....



I used a slightly altered True Line Trains CP tuscan paint and a set of CDS dry transfers that was made for the express reefer, burnished on to decal paper and then applied. The transfers are not as clear as decals but they are correct for the model; I don;t know of any decals made for this car, Black Cat doesn't do any..... I had to use a 00 brush and a bit of paint to "hollow out" the "A"'s in Canadian Pacific...ugh !

BLMA ladders, Gold Metal sturrups and MT 1023 couplers with their wheel sets (my FVM wheels don't fit the resin trucks)

The kit comes with two options for the hatches, the original wooden platform and hatch or the later single hatch w/o platform; allowing the modeler to add the foot rest 2 x 6 on the car roof edge as I did.

Mild weathering and a semi gloss finish were applied...



Here the car is in service with the "Mountaineer" headed east to Calgary where she'll be switched off from the head end....

Geoff's up'd his game with these kits; the walls are thinner and the detail is better. I'm half way through the first of two HW baggage cars and hope to see it complete this weekend.
