Tichy Train Group Wrecker Trucks?

I'm on the verge of getting a Tichy wrecker train. Of course, the kits come without trucks. What would be an appropriate type truck for the wrecker? Andrews? Don't tell me "arch bars!"

Andrews would be a good choice. Arch bars might appear on some of the cars that would be repurposed and on their 2nd or 3rd lives. They wouldn't be going very far and cerrtainly not off-line. The crane might benefit from 3-axle Commonwealth or Buckeye trucks - I forgot whether they will fit.

The TTG crane is modeled after a 120-ton Brownhoist and is limited to two-axle trucks.  Here's a nicely-angled pic of a similar SP prototype to help you:

I don't know what those trucks are or whether they were stock issue with the car, or replacements received during the crane's service life.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll go with MTL Andrews trucks. Now to find a dealer who has them in stock.

Can't remember which ones I put on mine.
I think Andrews.
Eitherway, they were the trucks that were around the workbench  :facepalm:





[nice WB-off picts with trucks conveniently covered by trees]

I suggest getting some flat lead weights, as the nuts provided work ok for the crew cars but I had to add some weights under the flat & crane cars.

I just thought of another 2 questions. Should I get MTL Andrews trucks WITH or WITHOUT couplers. If without, what MTL coupler fits on the ends of the wrecker?

Those are some heavy trucks with leaf springs on that SP prototype - nothing like that in N scale.
Here's some good news, though. Photos on this web site show trucks that look similar to Andrews and they have coil springs - although more springs than the normal Andrews truck has. Maybe a Dalman truck would be closer to prototype for the crane and would give some variety. The Dalman has more springs and a higher load rating. Microtrains has it. Also take a look at the Atlas National C-1 truck, although I don't know if it is available as a separate item.

That is true. Just making sure you knew about them.  :)

It looks like the crane should have a pair of tender trucks with leaf springs, but those would be hard to find.  Maybe Atlas caboose trucks would work?

Actually Bachmann has tender trucks that are quite similar.

I don't know about that.  A pair of Atlas's Bettendorf friction bearing caboose truck, with a little added frame outside the journal boxes would be a very suitable replica, IMO.

Just about any freight truck would work.  When being moved, the trucks only have to support the weight of the crane.  At the job site, the outriggers SHOULD be extended and blocked, so the trucks are supporting little if any weight, and certainly not the weight of the load.  I'd use whatever is appropriate for the era your crane represents, if it's fairly new, or whatever you have handy, if it's well used. 

The best photos I can find of similar sized cranes on the GN seem to show some type of cast frame trucks, while the SP&S and MILW cranes appear to have kept archbar trucks at least into the late 60s.

As for MT couplers, either 1025 (my choice) or 1015 will fit fine, and either will allow the ends to be filled in and detailed.  One item you might add, if you want to go to some work, is the rail clamps and chains.  These were used on the "rear" of the crane to help keep the weight of the load from tilting the crane when lifting from the track.  They fastened the rear to the railhead, and any attempt to lift the rear would mean moving the entire track structure.  Since the crane could be turned to lift on either end, both ends had them.  The outriggers were used to keep the crane from toppling sideways when lifting an off-track load.

 :|   When I built my crane years ago from the original Demi Trains kit I substuted the then kit trucks, Bettendorf with Rapido Couplers for Kadee Bettendorf trucks as seen under a WP crane although those could have easly been earlier Andrews with heavy springs. Nate Goodman (Nato).
