I recently purchased a used N-Scale Kato SD40-2 original.   When I test ran it, it produced a grinding sound.  Not good.  I took the trucks apart and found that the idler gears were completly worn out.  I called Kato and was told that these gears are no longer available as spare parts.  Does anyone have a broken down unit that still has good trucks they would be willing to sell?

That's weird.  Kato's parts page shows them available.

The wierd thing about this is the parts list that comes with the loco shows two sizes of idler gears.  The Kato website says that, even though the parts list shows both sizes, only one is available, which isn't correct either.  Seems that some of these locos were manufactured with the two sizes of idler gears but subsequent ones were not.  Also, Kato, for some reason, decided to not make the small idlers available as spare parts.  Therefore, unless I can find a truck from the original series, or find a complete set of the small idlers, I'm out of luck.

Doug, from what I have been able to find that truck is the only one with the 930080 small idler gear version 8. Must have to do with the offset center for the -2. I do not have a parts breakdown for the mid production version but I belive they are a finer pitch gear. I have 2 trucks with broken ears and another 2 locos running with the same. Wish Kato would rerun the old chassis. Bob.

I've got a pair with broken retainer tabs.
Their from old SD-40s, but I'm not sure which run.
One was a undec and the other was BN 6338.
Got lucky and found an  old SD-45 mech so I was able to swap trucks.
One's painted gloss silver.

Let me check my parts bin when I get home from work later.  Think I have a pair of trucks that suffered the same retaining clip breakage.
