Weekend Update 10/7/2012

I attracted the FBI virus last night . The reboot caused me to loose the shots of UP 819 , including what I was to post today . There isn't a punishment severe enough to the sumbags that get there kicks breaking balls like the cyber terorists they are . Well back to the repumping of tid bits and bytes for me .

Officially broke ground on the new Fort Nelson shelf layout. 



I am now totally sold on shelf tracks, brackets and hollow core doors for a fast, easy and cheap start to a new layout project.    I used cheap plain bi-fold closet doors to form the 18" wide benchwork.  Shelf height is 58" and the lighting canopy will be 70" above the floor.  While there are no plans to double deck this layout right now, it is nice to know I have the option to build down in the future if I want to.

My first time ever detailed/painted & decaled locomotive ever...Atlas/Kato SD-9 decorated for Jerry Gundersons "Ford City Northern" and my newest addition to my 50' Boxcars...

This is a non-standard scheme.

The blue trucks are standard.  All stealth had blue trucks/fuel tank- with two exceptions I've found so far after looking at hundreds of photos.

One had gray trucks/fuel tank, and one had black trucks/fuel tank.  Although many LOOK black- but it is dirt.

This SD45 is non-standard because it has gray pilots.  About 7 or 10 had gray pilots.

And it is done.  I don't tend to do any/much superdetailing for simply a re-paint.  If I kitbash, then I often go the extra mile.

Actually Ron I was only thinking that you needed yellow on the handrails and number boards in it.

More weathering experiments while I build up some momentum for the bridge solid modeling project.  I tried my hand at a couple of different techniques and car styles.  I am nearly at the place where I think I can handle batches of cars with one body type efficiently.  And I had to learn to renumber locos, which was easier than I thought it would be. 

It certainly is easy to go over-board with weathering.  I find light weathering to be much more challenging and in some ways satisfying.  Luckily for me many of the FM units looked very shabby in the timeframe I am modeling, especially the Trainmasters and the units in the old "block font" schemes, so I have room for error here.  In the end I think they match the prototype photos pretty well.
