Pennsy Centipedes

I'm thinking of a kitbash to recreate a Pennsy BP-60. The shell would certainly need to be scratch built or cobbled from a drastically reworked E-unit (got to have that "babyface").
For the mechanism I was thinking I could modify a Kato (or Trix) GG1. The sideframes wouuld might not be correct, but with an extra "driver" grafted in I would think it acceptable. Something like this...

If I knew how I would use this 3D model to create the shell...

It would be nice if somebody could make a 3D model of a babyface locomotive. It would also be a nice addition for NYC fans.

What PRR stuff wasn't made in brass?

Not trying to be a braggard here, but quite a while back I made a complete set of Baldwin "babyfaces" for Train Simulator. Including the New York Central 1500 HP "pocket" passenger units (DR-6-4-15) and their freighters (DR-4-4-15)...


Gulf, Mobile & Ohio "Gulf Rebel" (DR-6-4-20)

CNJ (DR-4-4-15, the early Pennsy freight sharks used a different body, same running gear).

CNJ double ender (DRX-6-4-20)

SAL pocket passenger unit (DR-6-4-1500)

The SAL centipedes (DR-12-8-30 I think)

Missouri Pacific (DR-4-4-15)

I also modeled the locomotive UP ordered and cancelled, which became the demo pair...

They are 3D models, but I'm not sure what can be done with them. I know about Shapeways and 3D printing, but I don't think the technology is fine enough. If I could use these in a CNC milling machine I would rather make aluminum molds and cast a few.

There's a bunch of other stuff I made...Mostly first generation cab units and cars and trucks from the 40's. There's few PRR buildings too.

The DR-4-4-15's were sometimes on Boston and Albany trains through Springfield Mass.

The early Bachmann DD40X trucks have the correct wheelbase and wheel diameter, although the sidetruck detail would have to be totally replaced.

Ed, don't let the looks of the photo fool you.  Photo is not the best and I did heavily weather the unit.  Been sitting on a shelf for awhile and is covered with dust.  As far as running.  Non DCC but after all these years it still does run, albiet noisy as hell.  Was only good for running on straight track as I never had curves that could handle that beast.  As the PRR ran them in pairs, I had plannede to buying another one some day but they are redicuously priced when they show up on Ebay.  More or less just a shelf queen or something I can sometimes stick in an engine facility or junk yard.

I was thinking GG1 because it's the same look of articulated running gear used on Baldwins...It also comes with the four wheel trucks at each end. Never even considered a DD-40. I took a look at one...
and I can see what you mean. I could get by with the DD-40 side frames. I'd be happy just to have the "impression" of a BP60. Kitbashing that mechanism would be a bit of work. The metal used on the loco frame is tough to cut...Maybe I should just go with this...
and pretend it's a BP60... :)

Shapeways is not the only RP company around and there are other technologies that have the resolution to create just about any engine or car in N-scale. 

Only problem with them is that they're more expensive than Shapeways,  but their resolution is .0006" in the Z-axis and no "layering" is visible because instead of curing layers, they cure pixel by pixel.

The machines are called "Perfactory" machines and one of our members (I can't remember who right off hand) found a company in New Zealand which would do his cabooses (4 of 'em) for $140 bucks or so...which is not too bad actually, especially considering the quality.

So, how bad do you want your "Baby Faces"???
