Love the shots of your layout!...I didn't know there was a flyover at Ash Fork on the old line...I guess this location was where the line went 'back' to right hand running westward all the way to Frost...

Beautiful work. Especially the Ash Fork depot scene. The modeling is first rate, but the "staging" of the scene is really eye catching.

Really nice pics Gordon. I find it interesting that you chose to model the Johnson Canyon bridge when it was buried alive (and still is) with fill in/around 1921. Most of the retaining walls have a 1921 built date on them. I would have rolled the calendar back too since I am partial to bridges myself.

One point though, since Johnson Canyon is east of Ash Fork, wouldn't the catwisker units being heading down hill?

good catch Bob, the area was an afterthought/ flat without a grade....after attending operating sessions with helpers and DCC I thought I would redo the area. The orginal line that the A&P built was the coolest(for modelers!!) with tight 10 degree curves and tunnel flowing the creek, then ATSF built the second line in 1922 which had no outstanding features. I was already modeling Kingman and Winslow so I thought the area around Williams would be good but not the line to the Grand Canyon. So Supai hill was it but on a double deck layout is was difficult to place Ash Fork at the bottom of the hill so I flipped it and made Ash Fork the top of the hill. I also was able to include the Flyover bridge near Gleed(lower track is dummy) which is still visable from orginal Route 66. I thought I read a story in the Warbonnet"bad night on Supai hill" that was dated in the 1940's and the bridge was still there? But the B&W photo that I referenced the most had a passenger train with a big dome(1954)crossing the big fill, and I wanted to model the bridge so on my rr it was filled late 53/ early 54!! So we add/ remove helpers at Kingman and Winslow and it really adds to the operations....BTW I removed the motors and gears from 2 of the 4 F7 units before I saw Mike's article in NSR about helpers and "derating" locos.  Gordon/ Santa Fe-All the Way 1953
