CSX eyes intermodal sites in Baltimore

BALTIMORE – CSX Transportation is working with the Maryland Department of Transportation to review four sites in Baltimore for a new intermodal facility, reports the Baltimore Sun. The four locations under consideration are near Locust Point, Curtis Bay, Mount Clair, and Mount Winans. The railroad was approached by Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake about locating the facility in the city after looking at other locations in the state.

The new facility would allow CSX intermodal traffic to avoid the Howard Street tunnel in the heart of the city. If a suitable location within the city can not be found the railroad will resume searching for one nearby.

Not sure where they'd put in Locust Point.  The obvious places are now full of condos.  Suddenly selling Port Covington to Walmart seems like a really bad idea, doesn't it?  That's where CSX ran intermodal out of until Seagirt opened in the mid-80's.  I knew then that the tunnels would be a problem.  Port Covington would have been ideal since the WM line out had no serious clearance issues, connections with both the B&O and PRR routes, not to mention deepwater dockage.  Oh, and CSX already owned it. 

Now it has a greeter in a blue smock.

Great moments in bad planning.  But now there's a nice opportunity for more billions to go into a hole that didn't have to exist in the first place.

Sparrows Point could be available soon....   

But I doubt NS and CSX would play nice with each other for all of that business. Could be prime real estate though for an operation like this with the shipyards, existing rails (PBRR - ?), etc.
