General Electric builds 5,000th Evolution Series locomotive

 Published: July 20, 2012

ERIE, Pa. – General Electric Transportation has rolled out its 5,000th Evolution Series locomotive. The locomotive was delivered to the Union Pacific under the road number 7964. It will be used this weekend along with 4-8-4 No. 844 to pull the Denver Post Cheyenne Frontier Days special from Denver to Cheyenne, Wyo., and return. On July 22, No. 844 and 7964 will pull a fundraising special for the Cheyenne Depot Museum between Denver and Cheyenne, which is also used as a way to ferry the steam locomotive back to its Cheyenne base.

Production of the Evolution Series began in 2005 and was designed to meet the Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 2 locomotive emissions standards that took effect in that year. The locomotives are equipped with either AC or DC traction motors depending on the customer. There are four types: ES40DC, ES40AC, ES44AC, and ES44DC.

Don't know the number of SD40-2s built but have they now outnumbered them?

According to Wikipedia, there were 3,982 SD40-2's produced over a period of 17 years (1972-1989).  5000 GEVO's over 7 years is a lot, but I think it's the only model GE makes now (true?).  "You can have any model you want, as long as it's a GEVO."

Well, "GEVO" is the entire series of 4 distinct models, not a single model. This would be more like comparing it to say, total production of SD40-2, GP40-2, SD38-2 and GP38-2 which were concurrent production.

There are additional export models too.

True, there are different models within the line, but I was thinking with my modelers hat on: the differences between them are mostly internal.  In fact the external differences between phases of a given model are probably as (barely) noticeable as the differences between models.

Are there any true 4-axle GEVOs made, other than the C4 which is 6 axle, but only has 4 powered?

^^^^ Word. They're all "toasters" as far as I'm concerned. Bleah.

Only the Yank ones are anywhere near similar, ever seen a ES40ACi? ES44DCi? ES58ACi? ES59ACi? Vastly different beasts to the USDM Evo.

Agreed. The SD40-2 was a success in a world where there was much choice in road power. Remember that some roads (CN and PC come to mind) were buying GP38-2's and using them on road freights, and those same two roads as well as Chessie & WP had a thing for the GP40/40-2. ATSF and SP had a thing for the SD45-2. These all cut into the production totals of the SD40-2. Better to compare with the entire -2 line, which Wiki says is ~8369 units.

That was my original point:

Since the GEVO is the only "model" in their domestic line (lumping together the 40/44/AC/DC), you should compare it to the complete output of a shop over a similar time span in the past, not that it really matters.
