N scale URTX reefer - it's time

OK, N scale manufacturers on TheRailwire, this is a plea for a new product. For those of us modeling anywhere from the steam era to the 70s, we need a URTX reefer. Walthers has made a Milwaukee Road variety available in HO and it's still a hole, for some of us a major hole, in our N scale fleets. The distinctive horizontal riveted seam across the middle of the car, diagonal panel overhanging roof, and rolling pin Dreadnaught ends are key to the model. Notched and straight sill and 4-foot hinged-door and 6-foot plug door versions would cover a major number of paint schemes out there; many of which have been applied already to the IMRC and MT PFE reefers, incorrectly.

Yeah, that probably would be a popular model, even though there are two period-specific steel ice reefers already on the market.

So many paint schemes to do. Like the recent MTL Raskin car, and so many of the IMRC cars. Too bad they weren't on a car with more of the proper characteristics of the correct cars. Plenty of revenue generating possibility for the manufacturer willing to be proto-conscious.

The Milwaukee had a number of these, so maybe Fox Valley can do them as a companion for their MILW boxes.

Everyone knows that there's two different cars in that picture right?

As for the location, John identified the location and thought it was some sort of cold storage warehouse.  That might be a much as you get.  There aren't to many that know more about Minneapolis RR history than John.  Looking at a maps, it looks like it's too far off the main tracks to show up on other pictures of the area, but if I get a chance I can see if any old maps say anything.

Jason,

I am not a URTX expert. I had assumed that the plug door car was a rebuilt from the original swinging door version. Do you know if this correct?

Best wishes, Dave

I don't know for sure about URTX but I believe that to be correct.  You'll notice the sil looks to be reinforced as well.

I do know that Rath (RPPX) converted older cars to plug doors.

What ever happened with those etchings?

Oh...those....um....on my to do list.
For those of you who are new to The Railwire, Jason is referring to my plan (launched in the previous decade it seems) to build some DSDX/URTX/MILW RB beer cars using etched brass sides.

I have decided to use them to build a master and then cast the cars. Too many things I want to do, and not enough time or skill.

Best wishes, Dave

Dave that project is either new to me or I just forgot. It looks like you are almost there with the brass sides. What do you plan on using for the core?

In addition to FVM, maybe the URTX cars would be a good choice for Fine N Scale as a kit.

Daniel,

This is a little less than two years old at this point.

Hopefully I will finish these beer cars before they turn 21!
The Deluxe Innovations boxcar has the correct roof and ends. They just need to get integrated into something that would work as a master.

Best wishes, Dave
