Well hi folks!  My first weekend update entry... some Northern Pacific Steam.
Andrew Hegstad did one of these a few years ago, so I followed his lead on some of the basic changes
and colors. 

My two 0-8-0's were New York Central, so I had more mods to do.  I  relettered and reformed one into an NP.

I went through a lot of trouble to graft a raised Atlas coal bunker onto the Walthers tender to make it, what I thought,
more correct for an NP G-1, only to find out through Andrew that after the mid-1930s, they changed those tenders to look more like the Walthers one with the set-in coal bunker sides.  But it was a lot of work to rebuild the tender, and I am not about to undo that now, so I'll just play "pretend" about the 1930s date and happily run it on my 1950s era layout.

Worked on coloring more rock faces this weekend and finally put some coloring on my tunnel portal and abutment as well. 


Also, having a bit of a dilema regarding which coal mine to use.  Here is the first one.

I'd go with the other mine as opposed to the New River option seeing as how with the available space and the surrounding area, it seems to look more at home there. The new river mine seems to overpower and sorta crowd out the scene a bit too much. -Cody F.

First post here, coming over from Atlas.  I see some old friends, and lots of new layouts.  Here is some recent shots from the paper mill area.

Glad to see the G-1 done Max.  Great job on the paint and weathering.  You know the NP was known to swap tenders quite a bit so who's to say yours didn't get a tender from a scrapped engine late its career.   Now I'll have to study your passenger paint study.

Yes, the first mine works way better for me...it screams coal mine to me, and with the train, it really gives a great sense of scale...add a few workers and maybe a truck, and I'd say you're good to go with that first mine. The second just looks too stark to me

Thanks Andrew!  Yeah, I wanted it to look like a hard-working dirtier engine.  And weathering powders are great for pulling up
the details the the rivets.
I have scoured the web, but cannot find ANY photos of those G-1's after the 1930s.  I guess that will be one I regularly search for
(like a photo of SP&S 700 pulling an all-green North Coast Limited, which I doubt ever happened but wish....)

Great job Max (as always).

Well I have been working over a recent ebay purchase. I bought a Bachmann Light Mountain on EBay and opened it up and VOILA - not only does it have a decoder (which the listing mentioned nothing about) BUT it's also sound equipped to boot. It wouldn't run very well initially so i took it apart reworked the bearing blocks and cleaned up the wires ...  only thing left to do is move the wires to the side. It pulled maybe 10 cars when I got it - it will handily do 25+ now and the sound and light aren't shorting out. Thank you Kapton tape.

Also version 2.0 of the bearing block "trick" for the Bachmann Light Mountain - instead of tape - use a dab o' solder on 2 sides of the bearing block. More permanent and wont come out when you take the engine apart for the 2-5th time. Works great.

Picture is of a test fitting a new weight in the boiler. Weight is made from a egg sinker I clamped in a vice and then cut in half. Nice rounded shape that needed minimal milling.

For coal mines, the first one looks better to me as well.  The second one looks more like an ore loading facility of some type, although it could be used for coal.
