This was discussed on RW at some point. Trying to dig it up via search. ...Pretty sure someone claimed that some ran into the 80s, but right now the RW search is giving me some dead links. ...
Found it: https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=19724.0 Turned out that you were the one who postulated the '60s-'70s. Just from the car design and appliances, these cars were likely built in the '30s. One could safely venture that most were out of service by the '60s, save for a handful kept around for M/W.
ACFX 84 , nee SHPX 84, was still in service from Sylvachem Corp. in Port St. Joe, FL, in the 1980's. It was shipped to their distributor in Newark, NJ, loaded with Tall Oil Fatty Acid, Tall Oil Blend, and Distilled Tall Oil. The RF&P wrecked it at Acca Yard in Richmond and ACF Industries was unable to replace it. It would have cost more than the residual value owed by RF&P to repair it. CSXT merged the RF&P into it in '87 or '88, so it was prior to that year.
Joe,When you develop the link and pin coupler you might consider a conversion kit for that 4-4-0 from Atlas.
Working on some new roofs, at some point you should be able to swap out the offending unit.
..........you will be able to replace the draft gear box it is built into and replace it with a body mount MTL coupler...which one...still working on that..........CheersJoeMTL
And (a surprise) the special-order meat reefers are on the 36-foot body instead of the originally-planned 40-foot body.
That more or less kills me adding them to my refer collection , unless there are some with proper placed reporting marks to reflect the 50's decade .
Except that there wouldn't be billboard advertisement reefers in the 1950s, as they were long banned by then.I'm hoping they include some of the post-billboard meat reefer schemes in the series so those of us who model post 1940 can acquire some.
