The original was to include 'static' Nn3 sections of track to represent the QR trackage that the GDRMCo passed over, on the next iteration it will be a functional mainline (pretty much 2 layouts in 1, normal freight and a passenger train allowing some switching on the QR line, big a$$ ore trains and associated operations on the GDRMCo line).

Besides locos & wagons etc, don't forget to also stock up on things like bridges or kits that will fit your concept (if any do). I have been bitten in the arse a few times by thinking "I can always order that later". Then when its time to actually build the layout, "Oh that company went out of business a couple years ago."
Buffering...

Maybe you can cut a deal on the custom ore wagons with your Railwire friends...  I have a great layout in mind if I could get those.
