Please guys, just stop.  The cab windows are the worst feature in this model and and are in no way better of even close to the Atlas model.

I'd say there probably is.  The drive itself is narrower than the Atlas drive... The Atlas shell drops right on to it, while the Bachmann shell is pretty snug on the Atlas drive.

If you use a Z-2 decoder, or possibly even an M1, you could easily drop the top by the thickness of the board, and a little milling might take it down a bit further, judging by the amount of frame above the motor.

RE the cab windows, I think Bachmann's actually got the edge...

I just noticed in the photos that the Bachmann has the yard switcher pilots with footboards whereas the Atlas has the road switcher pilots, so less conversion work for those who need the
footboards.  It also seems to me that the Bachmann rides a little lower.

Does the Bachmann have tread detail on the deck and steps?

Lee, I love you man, but the windows on the Atlas model more closely replicate the RS-3's dimensions and appearance.

I'd have to say the Atlas model is the more accurate one.  I hung around Atlas back in the early `80s when this was being designed, so I can testify it's very faithful to the prototype.

The Bachmann unit looks good, and it's a good unit to help get people into the hobby in N scale.  But the cab appears to be not tall enough.

Surprised none of the  s mentioned the lack of grabs on the hoods. Which, IIRC, was deliberately done my Bachmann to reduce cost. It will certainly make it easier to retrofit it with wire grabs.

Just buy an Atlas cab and graft it on the Bachmann shell. We cry about RTR not being 100%, but we cry about people that can't pick up an Xacto.

So if we're gonna complain might as well complain about all the louvres on the long hood you have to shave off!

I like the exhaust pipe on those proto photos.  To my eye, a pretty interesting design of locomotive.  I can see why there is so much interest in it.
