Heck, he's retired, got two pensions and social security .. nothing better to do than argue about K4s on a model train forum .. if it were me, I would go build a layout in that huge new basement

so I got to wondering...
I re-read the first post again.

I believe the answer is yes the growth n-scale is being
limited by the lack of products.
the questions that follow on from that answer are
going to generate a lot of controversy.

however, I would like to avoid  the thought
that we in n-scale should be looking for the HO guys to join us.
What a mess.
hohohohohohoho

more seriously,
The demand for any one item in n-scale
is currently about 1/3 of HO only because that is the approximate
split of number of people claming one side of the fence or the other.
and sadly, the HO manufacturers seem to ...
GUESS
the n-scale market demand will be in line with that ratio
based on HO performance.

As Bowser has bailed from their HO line of loco kits
it is not hard to think that the demand for PRR steam may be in decline.
of course strong competition is never taken into consideration.

a couple more digressions.
I will point out that no one has ever asked me my opinions
nor plumbed the depth of my pockets when it comes to PRR steam engines.
So I know there are flaws in the Marketing Data for any outfit
even thinking of doing any n-scale steam.

the other part of this digression is what I do may not indicate
what others do.  If I feel any loco has any merit I usually get three.
no clue what HO folk do.

When it comes to n-scale and limiting growth
the question becomes what alternatives are available?
why does z-scale not grow?
(expensive springs to my mind, no matter what is available)
are we really losing potential n-scalers because
this or that model is not available?
Given the number of people in n-scale state
the space for a layout dictated the choice
we can set them aside.
how many are left?

now the reason I bring all of this Marketing hoo-ha and personal experience
into this thread is to make this point

HO is already dictating what n-scale gets.
if it does not sell in HO.... we WILL NOT get it.
I think that is the wrong approach but it is what happens.
there are places where n-scale is very diferent from HO

few manufacturers even begin to see this truth.
let alone try to help N-scale grow.

.......Or start buying up K4's, rework them, and built a roster instead of complaining about it. It's never to late to learn a new skill...

Just ask Mr. Vollmer, how much of his PRR steam fleet was an RTR - out of the box purchase? I think the only one is his Y-3 and that's not even a Pennsy loco, just one that PRR borrowed for a couple years and put their name on.

Dave went from never doing a kitbash to having a reasonable stand in for, H, M, and L class steam.

http://thevollmerfamily.com/Pennsy/Roster/prrloco.html

Max Maggliaro has covered 75% of the Pennsy classes with his kitbashes.

Although I am not a PRR Modeler, I did have a railroad I wanted to model, but never did because of the lack of equipment, Logging. Before coming here, I had tinkered with scratch and kitbashin a little, But never though I would ever be in a posission to where I would be able to make models that I would actually prefer over manufactured models. Now a days, If they don't make it, I look into making it, and Most of the time actually get  start on it.

I'll admit, I didn't read the whole thread, as my past posts have probably indicated, But what I gathered is that, in short, this is basicly a complain that manufactures are not building what "We want" and are only building what in their opinion will sell, and not considering what potentally consider.

My advice, if someone don't make it, Change that, Make it yourself, If my ignorant a$$ can do it, with my memeroy issues, constant headakes, and shakey hands, no one else has any excuse. And if you are not willing to at the absoulte least try, then you need to really look into fixing that.

Guys . . . he does not get it!

If you stop replying to the thread, it will die like the "discussion" did long ago. Chester (Inkaneer) has done this before (remember the PRR Ore Jenny and the weathered ESM Gon) and he will do it again.

Thank the stars this is not the A-Board and 11 pages of discussion has not detonated after reaching critical mass.

My personal comment would be that if I had the financial resources, I would have the B&O P-7, S-1, EL-5 and EM-1 produced and roll back the date to somewhere between 1948 and 1953 for evermore. Since I don't, that does not mean I am going to leave N-Scale because those locos are available in HO. Let's be realistic about things. N-Scale is the greatest to model in. I just collect all of the B&O steam in HO brass and put them in my case to look at and take them to a friends layout to run them when I can. Works for me.
