So yesterday I was home sick, so I propped myself up at the workbench to catch up a couple of lingering projects.  I've had an undec GP-9 laying around, so I started foraging through the decals to see what I could come up with.  I have a set of Reading decals, only to be disappointed to find out that the Reading only rostered GP-7's.  So I grabbed the big can of black, and added another unit to the N&W fleet.


It's missing a few key details, such as the proper horns, sun shades and a nose mounted bell on the short hood... but it'll help relieve a bit of a power shortage. 

But here's the fun part...  I randomly selected the road number, 812, based on the configuration of number board decals I had on hand...  It turns out that unit was one of the NW geeps that ended up on the Maryland Midland...


Now I'm thinking I need to get another blank shell to do the MMID in speedlettering...

Nice job Lee.

I know changing out the fans is a chore, and moving the fuel filler and modifying the skirt is tedious, but if you start with a new shell, maybe look at removing the foot boards on the pilots.  I think that one of the more overlooked changes that can be done to GPs.

Sadly my PC decal supply is somewhat depleted.  Plus the ops scheme requires more NW power than PC.  I had also contemplated doing another chopnose for the WM, but the decoder is a TCS CN, so the short hood has to be high.

I want to get one of the new GP 9s with the lightboard decoder so I can experiment with extending the LED down into the chopnose.

Looks great and reminds me of my days in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in the early 1990s when first-generation units such as these could still be found roaming the Yadkin Valley Railroad in their previous owners' paint schemes.

But, get some decal setting solution on those decals before you hit it with any weathering or Dullcote.  ;)

Lee,

You were lucky with the number boards - cuz 813 is a phase 3. :P (but 812 is a phase 2 :D).

Nice job. You can use the high nose bell from the Atlas (SOUTHERN style) SD24. That and some BLMA horns for the cab roof. ;)

I used to love seeing 812 on the MMID.
