So what's the story on 2D-P5 trucks?

I've been following the trail of the PRR 2D-P5 passenger trucks going back a few years and it ends with everybody being out of stock.

Are these something that becomes available from time to time and then sell out?  American Limited has them on their site but at almost double the listed price everyone else has/had.

Anyone know the (current) story?

American Limited is the manufacturer... what dealers charge is their business.

They should be continuously available, and the tooling is now owned by American Limited.  I think the tooling was originally paid for by Michael Dunn of East Wind (?).

It just seems weird that MBK wouldn't have them then (unless they just sell them out all the time), N Scale Supply never seems to have things listed as 'sold out' but they are and Walthers doesn't have them in stock either.  Maybe Wiggy will have some at the GTE in Denver next month.

Mike, are these the same as what's on the CGW RPO's or do they just look similar?

Yes, I'd use them on the CGW's 60-series baggage-mail cars.  The major difference is the bracket on the leaf spring which is meant to hit a stabilizing bolster on the side sill of the PRR cars.  On the trucks, the leaf spring and bracket part is separate so you can either do some carving to remove the bracket (and install the leaf spring upside down so the good side is on top then) or substitute your own leaf springs.

Eastern Harrimans is an oxymoron... there were none.  What you are referring to is arched roof cars, which most were not Harriman.  The baggage cars are (or at least should be) available from Hell Gate Models.

The truck is similar to a type found on a number of eastern and southeastern cars (sans the distinctive PRR bracket) which I hope to try to build sometime soon from these trucks.  Hopefully it won't be too difficult to do so that the type of truck that I desire can be had.

The N&W had a few of the B60b-type PRR baggage cars on their roster (Class BEk), though the doors were different.  Since the N&W is a major connection for my roads I am sure that I will be buying some of these beauties sometime very, very soon and starting the process of rebuilding a couple. 

For any modeling the steam through second generation diesel era who have long distance trains running this car is a practical addition since these cars saw use on nearly every mainline operation in the U.S., thanks to REX's contract for cars with the PRR.  Definitely a nice model!!!

Those B60s lasted till the end of PC.  Amtrak didn't want them and I believe some were used in Conrail work service.

Oh, they lasted beyond Amtrak but you are right... PC and CR did use a number of them in MofW service... as did Amtrak.  The best one of AMTK was the 16320 which received Phase III AMTK stripes...
