Any particular reason that this thread is in the crew lounge?

Best wishes, Dave
If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

That's a very good question; I'd think it would belong in either General N or Layout Engineering as a sticky.

Back on page 2 the discussion went along the lines of doing something you had't done before. IE do a different scale/era/locale than you would normally build.
Can't model worth a darn, but can research like an SOB.

Oh good, now I can finally find the thread without clicking a dozen times.  :D

DKS, I don't know what the other dioramas looked like, but my guess is that you were robbed.

Photos of the first-place winner are about 3/4 down this page: http://www.pbase.com/atsf_arizona/n_scale_medford&page=all

It's a lumber mill with the roof off so you can see everything inside. Admittedly it's quite a piece of work; but I also learned the builder has had it in something like a couple dozen shows and won every time, and the organizers asked him if he'd just stop already so others can get a chance to win once in a while.

In a popular vote in Oregon - all else being equal - a thriving lumber mill will win out over a rusted-out NE corridor scene any day.*  It's just the nature of the audience.  Your diorama is still spectacular DKS!  I hope it survived the trip home this time.

* It does seem like there should be some limit on the number of times a winning model can be entered into what is substantially the same contest year after year.  The organizers could deem that previously winning entries only be shown as displays - along with their ribbons.

Oh, I've seen that one before.  It is rather good, but I'm biased towards filthy northeastern scenes.  Oh well, that's what you get for entering a contest in log country I guess.  You're still A-number-1 in our book (sorry Chris, the boxcabs had me, but DKS pulled off at least a tie here).

Some anime conventions do exactly that with their music-video competitions--you can't submit for judgement any video that's already won an award.

I'm also active in a model car contest circuit. We also have some superb modelers. Most contests have rule that if a model placed in the top 3 places at a the same venue (in the past years) it cannot be entered again. But there is no rules against entering a model which placed at another contest.  So those top modelers usually do the circuit of the model shows for one season and then the model is retired. I often see the same model win half a dozen contests in the same season. But next season is a fair game for other models to get to the top.  I think that is fair way of doing things. Now if the same model was being entered in the same contests year after year, and actually winning awards, that would be a different story.

Evidently that's what was going on with this one.

the bad thing about a popular choice judging is that the hardest part of modeling, creativity and originality,is not recogized or rewarded. while the sawmill is well built and impressive,it is still an unmodified R.L.W. lasercut kit with the interior detail option. in a properly judged contest it would lose so many points on that basis that it wouldn't be competitive against average work, and against someone of Dave's ability......forget it!  skipp

Found a block of wood last night that gives me an area of 130"sq going to model the Alemain terrminus on Melbourne's suburban network.

Hopefully 1) it's not too late to start and
2) by posting here you people will get me off my arse
