New LGThek Brasswork *soon to be released* Chassis!

The N-scale version of the very small, but extremely powerful two axle locomotive chassis by
L.G.Thek Brasswork to be released very soon. The original Z-scale (Nn3) chassis is an already proven very reliable workhorse for various locomotive projects. See dimensional drawings below.
 

 
The N-scale version is built from the same components, except wider frame and wheel gauge. It has an 8mm coreless motor rated 10V DC (or 12V with voltage dropping resistor), 28" scale weathered nickel silver wheels with small flanges, 6'-0" scale wheel base, 1:38 gear ratio, so it's a slow (approx. 35 scale miles max.) high torque, smooth runner, perfect candidate for real switching operations. The chassis made of phosphor bronze. Please note, the photos shown below are the Z-scale version.

In the near future we're planning the release of the same chassis concept with 33" scale wheels and various wheel bases. Also, there are etched brass and brass / laser cut wood combination industrial switcher and MOW shell kits in the planning stages. This could be exceptionally useful, especially if it's available in wheel diameters and wheelbases typical for diesel trucks. Looks like it may be low enough to make scratchbuilding "genset" locomotives trivial.

Nice!  Though a scale 6'-0" wheelbase is 11.43mm.

For now the plan is for the price point to be the same as Z. Each one of these locomotive chassis' are hand made and the labor is nearly, if not exactly the same for both N and Z. Out of all the chassis we have sold the satisfaction level is 100% positive. They are small but extremely powerful. If you press down on one on the track with the power on it will spin its wheels under considerable pressure. Pulling power is incredible. Lajos has some very good ideas for filling a variety of holes in the shell department as well. It will be a welcome addition to the scale I believe.

As a new member of the forum, let me join to the discussion, starting with an update. Last Sunday I've completed Three actual production samples.



The test layout was built on the top of a blue foam sheet, using Atlas code 55 flex track and #7 turnouts with powered frogs. For production tests I'm using a "Lambda" pure DC power supply, constantly monitoring the current drawn by the chassis tested. All three chassis are excellent performers, indicating the design works as planned. A few results of the first test runs: Starting voltage is around 1V DC. All three chassis were able to crawl through a clean Atlas turnout with 1V power without stalling. The no load current drawn by all of the chassis is around 10mA.

Last night I've built a "quickie" generic industrial switcher shell, about the size of a GE25 tonner.
 


The complete little industrial switcher weights 21.4 grams, and with the added weight by the shell the chassis performs even better. It pulls six Kato hoppers with ease at any speed. The six car train starts to move at 0.8V pure DC, and crawls through the Atlas turnout without any hesitation. Tests will continue with various controllers, and video clips are coming soon. An additional note, we're working on the R&D of a similar size 25t Plymouth industrial switcher shell. It will be available as a brass kit, assembled, unpainted shell and ready to run locomotives.

The L.G.Thek Brasswork miniature N-scale chassis is very powerful, but not powerful enough to power that wood beauty above. :0)



The chassis will be available mid-week at L.G.Thek Brasswork, then shortly after at Stonebridge Models too. My question is, what do you think, which locomotive body should be the first to fit over this small chassis, a 25 ton Plymouth, or the GE23t boxcab?
