Fifty three (53) pages are very enjoyable and welcome reading, certainly worth the purchase or subscription price.

I did not need nine pages devoted to "Preparing Your Basement for a Layout, Part 2."  I had obviously and conveniently forgotten about Part 1.  With all due respect to Mr. Postpichil, this is just not the sort of article that I purchase a subscription to see, and I am scratching my head wondering why Mr. Reddie elected to publish it.

It's called page fillers. A few issues back N-Scale Railroading used 10 pages to show different views of
trains running by the same flood loader. It was a nice little scene but 2 pages at most would have done
it justice. Model Railroader does the same by devoting several pages of photos on how to tear down a
layout, now they're doing the same on benchwork for the new layout. All a waste of space for me - I think
both magazines are afraid - don't know how or don't get any technical oriented articles to publish. But  in
their defense most readers had rather see a HCD or 4 by 8 layout.
Something to drool over and dream about, I guess.

NSM did the same thing with the butter dish milk car article a few issues back. Same car/position/scene, 10 different angles and few of them contributing to the how to model quotient of the article.

Ah, that explains why when you send them a package with article copy, photos and a disk with the high rez images they don't even reject you; they just say nothing... they are too busy preparing two part artices about preparing to model.....

Guess I ought to be glad to have not been able to go by the Little Choo - Choo Shop in Salisbury, N.C., today... sure would have hated to have to walk away from any issue NSR but this one I probably would have (kind of hard to put a basement under a mobile home)...

I actually liked the basement prep article... the stair assembly was of interest since I've been looking to tackle a similar project in my basement.  I suppose if you don't have a basement, or are a carpenter, it's not of interest.  At least it wasn't a rehash of stuff that's been online before.

Every magazine has a mix of articles, and some hit home and some don't.  If you didn't like the basement article, is it really any different than being a Conrail modeler and not connecting with an article on the SP's Coast Division? 

It's also not a full magazine devoted to basement prep.  It's one article dealing with the most expensive part of the hobby, the roof overhead.  As the OP mentions, there's 53 other pages of train specifics!

Gee,seems to me like a bunch of folks don't like how to articles.Not everybody with a basement starts out with a fully finished basement.The article in question here simply shows how the author prepped his.Try reading it you may find some useful information that you can use now or in future.Or you could just right a bitchy post about it on the Railwire.

I dunno, while it may seem a little mundane from a "monthly excitement of MRR articles" perspective, I have kept a file folder of all these "room prep", creature comfort, pre-benchwork kinds of articles over the years.   At some point, I WILL have a room to dedicate a layout to, and while the temptation will be there to just go crazy and start building benchwork, I know that learning from the expertise and/or mistakes of others is always wise.

No worries about "nothing good to say...", I violate that one all the time and of course regret it but.....whadayado.

I just thought the article was a little too much DIY-like. The other thing was it's the full basement. I know for myself, I'd rather see articles on I could only use XX% of my basement, so here's what I did, here were my struggles, etc. I'm not sure where the series is going, but it seems to be a journal of the gentleman's work,

I read the first installment and was puzzled about the length and tenure of the article. I respect the work the gentleman has gone to but from my high, exhaulted perch (LOL) it didn't warrant the length it was afforded nor a part two. I am not interested but recognizw others may be. I just find it an odd 'filler" for a magazine that should attract a lot of more topical submissions.

Having spent the past month rebuilding portions of my basement after a relatively mild flood, I think that basement prep is a valid subject for a model RR agazine to run. I haven't seen the article, but I am always looking for good ideas.

Here's a tip. I used my automotive hydraulic floor jack to lift sections of the layout so that we could pull out the wet carpet and then later to install vinyl planking.
