I think all of your answers are right in the auction listing.  The car is 33 years old, rare, and has sold at auction for $762.00.

More power to the seller if someone will pay what he is asking.  Looking at his completed listings, he sells most of what he lists, although it is listed as "Best Offer" on most of the completed listings.  E Bay doesn't say what the original asking price was.

There are some collector guides that tell this.

That railbox car is one of the rarer cars by KaDee..See that printed most of the roadnumber on a fifty ft WITH OUT roof walk and very few WITH ROOF WALK. That is one of the few times they used the same road number on different body styles. I  think it is interesting. (Even the more common version is somewhat pricey too). The first times KD did RAilbox were very low production runs. Now, if you view it as "the same plastic with different paint", I can see that too.

BTW, some eBAy sellers have not cought on to "collecting at stupid prices is over"!!!!

I have picked up some nice "rare" cars latey for 9 or 10 bucks per car.

Not everybody has a good local train show to visit. If it is sold out from the manufacture, your local hobbyshop can't get it, so the aftermarket is your only option. If you don't have an easy access aftermarket, then Ebay is you option. There are many people willing to pay a %30+ premium on Ebay to save them the hassle and travel expense of hitting the local shows time after time to only to come up dry. It just depends which is more valuable to you, time or money. Why do you think there are all those buy it now listings. We are an instant gratification society. We want it, and we want it now. Patient people are becoming a thing of the past.

We live in a free market economy. I don't see why you guys get so upset at others listing prices. If they sell it for the absurd price, then more power to them. They made out well and somebody got what they were looking for. I'm sure both parties in the transaction are happy. If it doesn't sell, obviously nobody is interested at that price. Does it really matter to you if somebody else spends too much money on an item? It's not like it is your money they are spending.

As far as train shows I never been to a so called "bad" one..The key is to slow down and look over the goods instead of rushing through the show.

As a example I picked up 2 used Southern locomotives (GP38/SD35) for $80.00 from a famous on line shop.I also bought a used NS GP38 from the same shop for $40.00..These locomotives are in mint condition and showed very little signs of use.

So,I give your "free market"  comment a minus one.

Then don't pay those prices and move on. Who cares what somebody else is doing, worry about your own needs. Some people are more interested in finding a specific loco (release, road number etc.) than just picking up a good deal. We live in an area that fortunately full of shows within a reasonable drive. Not everyone has a local trainshow to visit.

You just have to be willing to take your time and wait out a good deal.  I just won a  ATSF PA/PB set for a song and dance today.  I had my price range set and it has been about 3 years since I started hunting until today.  Now when I was after my Kato CB&Q passenger sets (I wasn't actively buying in the hobby when they were released) I bid with my credit card ablazing!  I set my crazy high price and made sure I was going to get it or someone else was going to pay through the teath to beat me.  I got all three for a reasonable price but I did not get a deal to write home about either.  I also picked up some UP 4 car Kato sets by waiting for years to get the right price.  It is not much different than going to shows except that you don't have to drive, pay for parking, pay to get in the show and then buy enough good deals to recoup the prior listed expenses.
