Looking for help regarding timescale for locos and rolling stock from mid-sixties to present such as what years did UP run yellow 86' auto parts cars with Union Pacific Railroad in herald, then switched to Union Pacific in herald; what time span did yellow cars run??  At one time I read such a list as it was posted on a forum but can not remember the source, nor all the information;  thanks

Actually those cars could run together as freight cars or locomotives may not have been repainted into the newer scheme for months, years or if ever.

So,one can't simply state such and such car scheme can't run with the new scheme.I still see old Blue and Black B&M cars rolling right along with MEC PamAm cars.

Larry is correct in that you can run all of those schemes together and be prototypical.  You can check the timeline on the Bluford Shops website to see if there are any Union Pacific references there that would help.

UP dropped "Railroad" from the logo in 1970. That and other UP timeline bits can be found here:

Oddly enough, many cars shopped after 1970 that didn't recieve full repaints, had the RAILROAD patched over.

Also the story on the UP 86' quad door boxcars can be found here:

True; I've seen the odd photo of yellow-painted cars taken within the last few years.

But there are minimum cut-off dates for certain things if you want to really be accurate. If UP dropped the "Railroad" from the herald in 1970 like Craig notes, and our friend asking the question is modelling the 1960s, then that would be anachronistic/inaccurate. If he's modelling the present, then he could include a car in the yellow, but it would be heavily weathered as it's in original paint from 40 years ago.

If you actually model a particular year, you can even try to get your hands on an equipment register and look up particular car series to verify whether any were in service in that time, but that doesn't tell you anything about what they look like.
