Welcome to the N Scale fold. Have some Kool-Aid. (Just ignore the keystones.)

Welcome, old friend!  We've been waiting for you!

Seriously, Russ, if you've got free rein in the 11' x 15' room, it might be advisable to build something around the walls.  You'll get more railroad that way.  HCD layouts are fun and easy to build, but, as with all table layouts, they waste space when you consider the aisles on at least three sides that a table layout usually requires.  In other words, if possible, a shelf-style layout is preferable.  Although, if you're not planning on filling the room or just want a small layout that is easily transported, a HCD is a good way to go.

Have fun!

Dave, I think Russ's goal is quick and dirty here. That said, there ARE 18" doors out there that might work on brackets for a shelf layout.

I would go with that with maybe one 36" one into the center of the room for a little more running,

Like this?  The Virginia Central was a 36" x 80" HCD with a 12" x 80" HCD for the yard-on-a-shelf:

Thanks for all the welcomes guys. I've been on the fence about this for some time now and decided that right now, an n scale layout is more practical because if I spend all my time building benchwork, my wife will have a thrombeau that I'm not working on the rest of the house. :). My thought is she won't notice a couple HCDs appearing. It will also allow me to experiment more with scenery stuff as my previous layout never progressed past the 'Plywood Plains' stage.

If you sneak the doors up stairs while she's sleeping, she won't see them for a couple months still, right?

Lee offered to give me the doors, the problem is it'll cost me more to drive to Salisbury than just to buy 3 new doors...

...but buying three new doors doesn't give you an ops session on the fabulous N scale Western Maryland.

and reusing the doors saves the planet! (we'll ignore the cost of burning the fossil fuels to get there! ;))
