Looks like CR has a few more than you think.

So how much different were the C30-7A?

Externally, very little differed, except for a couple of tall doors on their flanks.  Inside, the C30-7A had a 12-cylinder prime mover, as compared to the C30-7's 16-cylinders.

CSX modelers representing the early 90's can choose from the Santa Fe Warbonnet and Kodachrome units.  Those were very common in lease service on CSX in those days.  I saw them frequently in the southeast, including in the engine facility at Dante, VA, on the former Clinchfield.

Still, I'd like to see the eastern roads represented as always.  NS, N&W (two schemes), CSX, Seaboard, Family Lines, Conrail....  Maybe someday Kato will remember that those roads existed before bigtime AC's.

Well, to this BN fan, I'm pretty excited to get one of the two major BN locomotives left to add to my roster.  (GP50)  And, one of my favorite locos, too.  Yes, I had one of the older ones at one point and it was an awesome loco. (never had a loco that pulled better, before or since)  But I decided that Kato would eventually get to where we are today so I sold short.

On a related note, if anyone is buying the BN or ATSF (either) locos for parts, I might be interested in the shells.  I'll probably buy BN 5119 and would be interested in the 5000, and one of the ATSF shells. (any scheme or number)

Nope, there are other differences too, the nose was different, for one thing.

Bottom line, I'll cry foul at trying to pass a C30-7 off as a C30-7A.

You'd better talk to Daniel Leavitt he fleet bashed a lot of CORRECT conrail C30-7A's. He even cast the shells.
Who needs eastern roads anyway  :o :o :o :o

NS, CSX and CR all had C30-7s, although CR only had 6 or so of them (one of which is pictured in my sig). That's all I'm going to say about this one...

Go sit in the corner, Ed... any member of the CR mafia should know there were 10 of the 16 cylinder variant on Blue  ;D

IIRC, the UP ones would show up in Buffalo on the WLR, and the BN ones were common on the GTW, so they must have been eastern roads  :P

Plus CR had a number of former ATSF units in their CRL lease fleet.

Seriously, I should resign from the BoD... what was I thinking?? lol

The ATSF ones would be nice for later modelers, but I don't think Kato could EVER get their head around a leased locomotive.

I have to agree that the U30C and C30-7 are great news for BN modelers, as they had huge fleets of these.

I keep hoping to see more variations of the FB-3 truck, but I doubt if Kato will do it (even though they do offer two styles of Flexicoil).

Atlas has another variation of the FB-3 on the dash 8 C models, but as of now Atlas does not offer the sideframes in their parts department. :-\

I happen to have one each of the U30C and C30-7 from the original runs (UNDEC!), I still haven't gotten around to correcting the trucks. The only other hurtle is fabricating the long hood bell mount, but I'm kinda waiting to see if Atlas will bring the U30B (hi and lo) to N scale, as the high nose has the bell mount I need.

Is it still a wide body?

Either way it's not enough to make me want to switch scales.
Vincent

If N scale had good SD40-2s, C30-7s, U30Cs, SD45s, SD40s, and SW10s; I'd be in N scale.

Well, once at least:

This model is hard to find now too.  Perhaps that means it sold well.
