I built my first turnout this week, an N scale code 40 curved turnout, as seen in another thread here on the RW.  So, this weekend was no trains for me.  Despite having a lot of code 40 track to build, I worked on framing up a closet in our master bedroom.  You see, I moved into my wife's townhome last May, and we're still trying to resolve the storage issues.  Maybe it's a good thing that my townhouse hasn't yet sold, because a lot of my personal effects, including my treadmill and my trains, are still at my house.  So, since that's almost thirty miles away, I wasn't able to build any new code 40 turnouts or handlay any track this weekend.  Boo!

Wow Bill. That Santa Fe unit is just amazing. Its not really fair to the rest of us!

My more humble submission is below, the Gibson Yard office. I utilized the Silhouette cutter to scribe the cinder block and the window/door openings. I didn't lay out the roof properly and it has a gap that needs to be fixed or redone. Does anyone know of a resource for calculating the proper dimensions and angles as a function of roof slope? I used .030 styrene for the walls as that is what I had on hand, and I had a hard time getting the windows snapped out square. I covered this up using the double hung windows, but I may redo this in thinner styrene once my order arrives.

Late night addition. Nothing like Richie's incredible repurpose of the Bachmann 4-6-0. I still love the tender on that one. Something about that loco just says class, like a top hat and tails with that high coal bunker and stack.

I have shown this before but it is finally done. Earlier this week I worked out the regearing and got it running nicely on DC. I wasted most of today installing a Digitrax SDN144 in it today. I like the sound because I created my own sound file for it but I hate the lack of sync between the drivers and the sound. When they get that figured out, this will be a great decoder, until then, its just a smaller, less expensive alternative to a Tsunami or LocSound.







I rebuilt the tender to what I think will be my new standard method for wiring tenders. I sliced and diced the connector out of my 4-6-0 board that I discarded when I put the smaller tender behind it. This allows me to plug in a tender to and existing Bachmann equipment with the 6 wire harness. It worked out well on this tender. It will also allow me to swap tenders between loco's at will eventualy.

Are you using some sort of shelf bracket cleats to attach the wood framing to the wall? Or using actual shelf brackets attached to framing? I didn't know such a thing existed, if it does.

If you look at the lower right of the picture, you'll see his shelf bracket there and what looks like an L-girder on top of it. Pretty nice setup. How I used my shelf brackets and standards, I screwed a piece of 2x2 on top of the bracket and used that to support the front bracing.

I don't do any calculating; I make paper mock-ups. The thing to remember is, for a simple square like that, all of the angles will be exactly the same. So, the first piece will be symmetrical, and the rest will be identical.
