I think you'd be OK just to weather the black walkways to gray/dirt. Here's a new SD40-2, and you can see how dark the walkways had already become.

There is a theory that many Conrail Quality units had black walkways, and indeed Atlas has black walkways on some of their CR Quality models. Here's a prototype.

And for someone's future project, here's one that definitely looks painted black--at least looking at the slide under magnification (it is a bad angle). Decals are available, although body shells are hard to find.

Is it me, or does that slope behind the loco look like it's been sprinkled with ground foam? At first glance I thought it was a model shot, until I noticed the engineer.

It took me a couple hours to dump that prototype ground foam along the embankment before the train came!  ;D

Yes, it does look like ground foam.

i'll post pic's soon, iv'e done so far 1)U23B 2)kato SD-40S,2)atlas GP-40-2'S 2)ATLAS GP-38'S 2) ALTAS GP-38'S 1)GP-15 2)ATLAS B23-7'S, 1)1ST RUN ATLAS SD-60, the rest already had black walkways,8-40B'S,2nd run SD-60S,Troops SD-50,KEEP IT MOVING B23-7 GP-30,MP-15.I have to get around to weathing and detailing them a bit,I went by article in the 8/87 issue of MR magizine,as well as railpace, books etc...i have a conrail paint manual from 1976 but it say's nothing about walkways.I model Conrail from 1989-1990,i wasn't a big fan of the quality thing.my next prodject is a load of SD-40-2S just need to figure what to do about the trucks.my layout is a work in progress, its based on the N-scale mowhawk division from MR Dec 1993,but a larger version,i built my on a 8'x 40" plywood foam L girder bench peco code 55 DCC.

Jimmy, the trucks aren't any trouble at all.

In fact, I'm about to start doing another 2 to keep 6366 company, I'll take some progress shots and show you what I do. It's really easy, actually. They center axle is still a little off, but nobody's complained yet.

That freshly painted looks like a model but this whole discussion is a compelling reason to have eye level/above eye-level benchwork,  ;D

Looks like SD50s were black from the factory too:

Check the photo evidence link for confirmation.

Did someone forget to pull some of the masking on the front of that loco?

It looks like it. I've seen some where the number boards were like that too.

David, I just realized the 2 bottom photos were taken at Center St. in Youngstown.   :D 8)  I see those yellow Aliquippa & Southern switchers that were there when I was a kid.

Yesm Chris, Center Street is was. The yellow diesel in the far background is numbered 2001. Looking at the slide under magnification, I also noticed a small Conrail logo on the sill under the letter "A" of "CHAMPIONSHIPS" on the 6373. I think I've seen these on decal sheets, but I've never noticed them on prototypes before.

Ah, well, those can openers are actually "Painted in Juniata" stencils:
