I have a "what I did" about putting reliable electrical pickup in the Bachmann HO Oldtyme 4-4-0. This is an update of the original 2006 WID and includes electrifying the locomotive at:

Well, since I've got a pair of AHM 4-4-0s to do, this may come in handy.  My other problem is that the AHM motor either goes at warp speed or is stopped, even with power straight to the motor itself.  I need to figure out something that will replace it.

I originally developed this idea on the IHC/AHM/pola/ 4-4-0's when I was developing my ill-fated "OO/HO in the 1870's" project. Those locomotives aren't HO scale but OO scale. The IHC version would crawl with the wipers. Then I developed this method of making them run better.

A merge of the Athearn/Roundhouse 4-4-0 with the IHC boiler, making a OO/HO 1870's 4-4-0. The little guy is an HO figure the others are OO scale. With a straight stack and 1890's detailing it scales out to an 1890's HO 4-4-0. I found most people don't care that the locomotive is out of scale, go figure.

It did seem to look just a tad large; alas I haven't much choice in what I use.  The budget for this is very small, and I used much of that for detail parts.

Most of the RTR offerings in early rail are OO scale. Some scale out well representing a later era. When they did the tooling the merchandising people probably felt the cars had to be bigger to match the other available RTR cars. The Bachmann HO 1870's 4-4-0 is an accurate match to the 1872 Virginia and Truckee 1872 4-4-0's. Bachmann has never offered them in that road name.
