What is a "southeastern" pine? I am thinking loblollies? If so, I saved a post by Wazzou from 2006 about making pine trees from furnace filter and bamboo skewers. The process would work great for loblollies just by using less filter and making the trees top-heavy with foliage. Just I thought. I don't know forest make-up down south very well. Wazzou's technique would give a fairly decent representation, with some alteration, in N scale. It seems impossible to pull off the actual needle effect in N though. Maybe a static grass application?

Being that my business is in the timber industry, though in the PNW...they are in fact SYP.  There are SYP grade rules and SYP associations and standards.

Down da bayou, most of the pine trees are also loblollies and relic longleaf pine forrests.  More loblollie as you get close to the coast.  Sirenwerks sent me that PDF a while ago when he and I discussed this issue - its really worth looking at.

I'd love to see 1mm static grass for instances like this and lawn grass in general.

Here is what I wrote on my blog:

Yellow Pine is a term for several closely related species of pine with yellow tinted wood, including the Southern Yellow Pines (Loblolly Pine, Slash Pine, Shortleaf Pine, etc.), and the non-Southern yellow pines (Ponderosa Pine, Jeffrey Pine, etc.) and several others. More than one of these species may occur at any one site, with the term 'yellow pine forests' typically used in forestry and ecology to describe such forests or stands that contain more than one of these species. In the area of Virginia I am modeling Shortleaf and Loblolly Pine are quite common.

Since the trees are usually difficult to identify, the task of the modeler is simplified as at scale distances they look essentially identical.

I've tried the "Scotchpine or florist wire method" for making detailed southeastern pine trees and posted my photos & comments back in March 2009. They are labor intensive and if you have some of the raw materials on-hand already, then your costs might be minimal.

Take a look at http://www.jttmicroscale.com/viewcategory.asp?DirID=79, Old Pine, Scotts Pine, Umbrella Pine, Pine, and Cedar look pretty good for lower east coast pines.

I'll second the motion on JTT Trees in any type required.  I have several of there Trees and they are always the best of that type of Tree that I have.
