Went out to take photos, but didn't see any trains. So I went up to what is left of P&LE's Gateway yard. The yard is pretty much isolated so I had to do some off roading:

Here is a photo from our newspaper of the hump retarders being installed in 1957:

Here it is in 2010:

The car repair shop is at the right and still being used by the Youngstown & Southeastern.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youngstown_and_Southeastern_Railroad
They were in there welding on cars as I was asking to take pics. The secondary tower at the left was to further set retarders as needed. Here it is in 1958:

2010:

You can see the outline of the half round control stand on the floor.

The main "hump" tower:

Room with a view.

Souvenirs  :)

Here is an overhead shot of the whole yard when it was running:

Took a quick trip through Hagerstown the other week and stopped by the museum on Sunday.

Not much happening in the nearby CSX (ex WM) facility.

I dunno, Phil, those trees look crooked to me...

I caught these chopnose geeps on the WM in York today.

That paint scheme just out and out sucks.  Now, no matter where you go, you see NS, CSX, and the new borg on the block, G&W.  Even shortlines are getting dull!  I just missed it coming across the truss bridge.  They were shoving a cut of cars back up behind the new ball park.  Also, for those of you keeping score, the old WM freight house is completely gone now... :(

So far that G&W is not present where I live, but give it time, they own the place.

We got lucky, when GWI bought Utah Railway.  Part of the deal was that UR would retain their own, unique paint schemes.
We get some of the 'new Borg' paint coming through, periodically, but it's usually temporary.  It's either an inbound locomotive, that hasn't received Utah colors yet, or extra power for seasonal increases in coal trains.  Power sharing is far more common.  BNSF and UP power are more likely to be spotted in the UR lashups than GWI schemes.

Lately, we've been getting a few unexpected pieces of power, though.  Within the last 2 months, I've seen at least one GP20 on Salt Lake City Southern track (owned by UR), doing some local switching.  And I swear I saw a couple NREX SD24s doing some street running, back in November.  As always.... no camera.

On the down side....  many of the UR locomotives are popping up with the GWI version of the Utah Railway logo, instead of the UR version.  They retain UR paint, but that logo is butt-ugly.

We have an SD24 here:

Well now it is a SD18m, but it started out as Southern SD24 #6343:

Then it was C&NW SD18 #6642:

Latest Trains is about short lines and G&W is covered in detail.  Seems the orange and black are Princeton colors and most upper management went there.

The Maryland Midland's original colors were based on Auburn's.  I bet Auburn could kick Princeton's a$$ in football.
